Perhaps the best LSU basketball team!
That 79 team was awesome.
Speaking of old times
Ole Dale lined up some great recruiters:
LINK
Ron “oh the brief case of cash was missing” Abernathy
With Daddy Dale and “John hot plate Williams” advisor aka bookie. LINK
But but but Daddy Dale was “clean”. What a freaking joke.

Reading the replies in this thread only confirms my belief that LSU has some of the most uneducated basketball fans in MBB.
Who's Rudy Macklin? Wrong board. Now let me tell you about some real X's and O's and streetball.

I was at LSU from 78-81 and saw Rudy, Dwayne Scales, Ethan Matin, Greg "Cookie Man" Cook and the rest of those great players. It was an exciting time to be a Tiger basketball fan!
I was in the Basketball Band in 80 and 81.
Basketball Band in 80 and 81 was even more fun than Tiger Band.
The Assembly Center was always full.
Student Section was on the sideline and was full from the bottom row all the way up to the top row.
The Joint was Jumpin and it was an EVENT just as big as Football. (Hard to believe but true)

quote:They had great players during those years and def should have won an NCAA title. You had players like Rudy Mack, Dewayne Scales who could shoot the eyes out of a goal, the Green brothers as I called them in Al and Lionel Green, quintessial PG Ethan Martin, lefty shooter Jordy Hultberg, Greg "Cookie Monster" Cook, and Willie Sims. Later on you had Howard "Hi C" Carter, Leonard Mitchell, PG Derrick Taylor, Johnny Jones. Coach Brown should have won at least 1 NCAA championship with those kind of players back then. Later on he would have the Shaq and Action Jackson show and still failed to win a title. SMH

That team also featured the high leaping player known as the Astronaut, Dewayne Scales,
Scales was not on the Final Four team as he declared for the draft a year earlier after his junior season when they were eliminated in the Regional Final by Macklin's childhood buddy Darrel Griffith and Louisville.

Rudy Macklin’s retired number literally hangs from the rafters in the PMAC
Macklin was the rock upon which the Fantastic Climb to the Top was built.

Sorry I wasn’t alive in 1980 :(
tl/dr: I think you needed a comma to accurately state your point.

This is correct. The only things we discuss here are things like football uniform combos, the outfits that the WBB coach wears, and girls’ gym.

Song was "Tigers to the top now"?
There may have been 2 different songs back then but one also said something about Howard Carter shooting from the parking lot

That was a great song
Sat around waiting for Jefferson Pilot. First LSU team in any sport that I followed religiously.
Took it hard. Ethan Martin was my favorite player. Had this small white kid delusional about a future in basketball.

I remember how it threw his game off especially against Indiana, what might have been if he would've been healthy.
Still one of the better seasons in LSU history.17-1 in SEC Play but they didn't play well against Indiana. Honestly, 86 was the more disappointing loss though. My dad still talks about that game. We lived in Dallas at the time too so it was all the more disappointing witnessing it in person.

Loved this guy! I was living in Baton Rouge at the time and attended every game.
Correct me if wrong, but pretty sure he had 33 rebounds in his first game.

1978/79 season to 1992/93 season under Dale Brown was a fun time to be an LSU basketball fan. Averaged 21.5 wins a season, a .67 winning percentage, made 2 final fours and 2 regional finals. Our best seasons were 78/79 - 80/81 (although we did make the Final Four as an 11 seed in 85/86). Rudy Maclin was the star. I was a little young for Rudy, but remember loving Leonard Mitchell, Hi-C Carter, Derrick Taylor, Ice Reynolds, Don Redden, Nikita Wilson, John Williams and Rick Blanton.
