re: Is it verboten to point out that Whit Weeks was responsible for the 2 long TD runs?

It was Michael Scott cringe face bad. Swinson made money though.

On the Sellers TD run and the Sanders TD Run, Sage wasn’t even near the play. You’re thinking of another play.
lol what? You might want to watch it again. Sage absolutely whiffs on sellers as the last line of defense
That should’ve been a 10 yard gain at best

True, but Reliford was in front of Weeks. When Weeks saw Reliford go inside, he’s got to know that he has to redirect to the outside.
If Weeks understood what he was seeing in front of him, he had time to adjust.
Exactly
Reliford got beat and needs to learn to play assignment football. However, Weeks ran behind a massive pile of humanity where no one was finding a hole to run through, and saw what was happening in front of him, and should have leveraged the outside.

Impressive use of the word "verboten."

Dude, it's a team game, so yeah while there's plenty of responsibility to go around on both of those plays, the defense as a whole is definitely improving.
Also, while not an excuse, there was some serious uncalled holding to spring those runs.

You are showing your lack of football knowledge with this post. You may just want to delete it.
So you think that the defense end is always responsible for setting edge? I just want to establish that you think this. The DE never crashes inside of the tackle or tight end, leaving someone else to set the edge?

Weeks saw Reliford in front of him working to the inside. He should’ve known that he had to protect the outside. He didnt have to keep working to the inside once he saw that, but he did. At that point it was too late.
Each player has their own keys to read and then respond accordingly. I assure you Weeks was not keying off what Reilford was doing. In football you have to trust that the person beside you is doing their job and not try or overcompensate for your teammates … that’s how busted plays happen.

It’s the DE’s responsibility to force the runner inside
You actually have no idea what each of their responsibilities were on the play. But weeks definitely didn’t read things correctly either way. And it happened several times during the game.

Just facts - Saturday's DEF saw multiple NEW guys with the 1st team or in NEW positions - Shand, Weeks, Perkins, Z. Alexander & Spears. Toviano is another that has the measurables to get on the field and contribute. With more reps this unit has the ability to get better. I believe in Baker and the DEF coaching staff. The next two games are vital for our DEF (and our OL) to get it together and be ready to host OM.

I saw it, too. we love whit weeks but he got sucked into the middle on both plays. fixable.

What you saw was a 1-man defense beyond the DL. Anytime Whit isn’t in the perfect spot we get gashed. He was trying to make a play.
If we played Saturday without safeties it would have been the same score. It’s the worst position group I can ever recall seeing.

Sad part is, it could’ve happened more. Clearly the two long runs were reading Weeks. They would motion from the weak side, Weeks would shift toward the middle.
From there it’s just a read to see how far inside he moves with the hand off (or pull on the Sellers run) and bounce to the gapping void he left. Terrible containment.
Good thing is, that’s a simpler issue to correct.

Whit Weeks is a 90’s defense type guy.

The second one for sure was.

He was absolutely responsible for the Sanders run, not so much on the Sellers run. That one was on Sage Ryan.
What is being lost here by so many is that if not for them two bust we are talking totally different about this defense. If them two played are defensed correctly and they had stay disciplined you take 141 yards out of the rush total and SC runs for 102 yards instead of 243.

Right. I thought that (losing contain) was 100% on Reliford. But going back and watching a couple of analysts break it down, it was on Weeks. Reliford did crash inside, but Weeks is supposed to read that and direct outside to be the contain guy.
It was not Weeks’ best game, but I love how hard he plays and that if he’s gonna make a mistake, it’s gonna be at 100%. I tell my kids that if you’re not sure what to do, do something at full speed. Better to do the wrong thing at 100% than the “right” thing at 50%.
And Weeks isn’t gonna do anything less than at 100% effort. That’s an innate attitude that not everybody has. He can get his assignments/run fits figured out, but that innate aggressive instinct can’t really be coached. So this is a much better “problem” to have than the other way around if somebody always knows exactly where to be, but just doesn’t have the athleticism or instincts to make plays even if they’re in the right position. This game will make him better going forward.

There were a couple of plays that I thought he was blitzing but really he was guessing a gap early. SC O line did a good job on some runs eliminating the LSU D line and forcing Weeks or a Safety to make the play.

He played contain like a junior high linebacker. There’s ole Whit futilely chasing the play after he bit on the inside fake and the rb squared the corner and is off to the races.

And this may be some “cope,” but I’m almost happier that we pulled out a close win with a ton of mistakes than if we’d have gone out there and won comfortably like 31-13 or something. Sure, we’d feel better about the team, but I think a game like this can make us better in the long run.
1) We found out a lot about ourselves coming back down 17-0 on the road in a hostile environment. Made a lot of mistakes, but overcame adversity, and found a way to make the plays at the end of the game on both sides to win and should give the team a ton of confidence now that they know they have the makeup to do it.
2) Having a lot of mental mistakes on film can help correct them, and we have 4 weeks (including a bye week) to work on them. And it’s soooo much easier to do that after a big win than a heartbreaking 2nd loss in our 1st 3 games. There were tons of guys who made mistakes, but I’ll just use Whit and Nuss, because I think they have the right mental makeup to take coaching and learn from it. It was almost good that Nuss threw those picks and Whit filled the wrong gaps. Better to get those on film now and get em corrected than for everything to have been glossed over in an easy win only to have them rear their heads in a few weeks against Ole Miss whose too good for us to overcome them.
3) Our coaches made a lot of mistakes themselves. They really need to do some self-evaluation and self-scouting to figure out some things they’re doing wrong as far as game planning, play-call sequencing, personnel decisions, and overall preparation. Maybe they’re not as willing or humble enough to be self critical if we win a comfortable game where we weren’t really challenged.

Apparently to some of the idiots that post here it is verboten to say anything critical about the program. Your assessment of Weeks is correct. He seems to be coming inside to clean up because he’s not trusting what he sees. It is a coaching effort but it’s hard to calm out those giving max effort.
