Why is this shocking? Dinardo recruited some talent and had a few good years. He left Saban with enough talent to win the Peach and Sugar Bowls. Of course, Saban then took it to a whole new level. Dinardo's downfall was weak coordinator hires.

Three of the 10 years in the ‘90s, LSU had a winning record. No West titles in those three years (Arkansas in ‘95, Alabama in ‘96, Auburn in ‘97). And Alabama shut out LSU in Tiger Stadium in ‘96 in a game that decided the West title.

Those three years were good years, and I think they set a decent foundation for Saban. Those were three fun and exciting years. But 70 percent of the decade LSU finished with a losing record. That’s why people (rightfully) think the ‘90s as a whole sucked for LSU.

7 of 10 years were absolutely awful in the 90s

1) Overall lack of talent (Mike Archer followed up Arsparger's disdain of recruiting with a lazy effort; Hallman could recruit, but couldn't coach)

2) Poor coaching

3) the dreaded Curse Of The Purple Jersey. Dinardo was hailed as the savior of LSU football by successfully appealing to the NCAA for a home exemption, but even this permission which was granted couldn't lift the burden of Tepper's systemic mismanagement.

So LSU started the season #5, obviously with high expectations, and the fans rushed the field for beating Florida? Fast-forward 17 years and they rush the field for beating Ole Miss.

Man, I'm glad my college years fell in between there. Lots of glorious wins... No rushing because we expected to win.

That's when Cecil Collins ran all over an impressive AU defense for 235 yards. One of the best games by a running back I'd ever seen at the time. So what does DiNardo do on 3rd and 2 on the AU 47 with 10 minutes left in the 4th, and LSU ahead 28-24? Why run Collins when you can throw to Larry, The Purse, Foster. LSU ended up punting and that POS Dameyune Craig got AU to the LSU 17 where they missed a field goal with 6+ minutes remaining. After an LSU punt, Craig and AU got the ball back on their 20 with 3:12 left. They drove for the winning touchdown aided by a couple, shaky at best, PI calls. Hard to sit through that game. That game is one of the main reasons I can't stand Craig to this day.

Most of us hate conservative calls, but after the way Cecil was running against their D, why throw the ball? There was a collective gasp in the stands when Herb (6-21-2 int's, 115 yds, 1 td) dropped back to pass. They key at that time was keeping the ball out of Craig's hands.

The ranking of #5 by the NYT in no way reflected the thinking of the AP, the major poll at the time. At any rate, LSU was AP preseason #10 in 1997. In 1998, LSU was preseason #9 and got as high as #6, after week 4, before totally falling apart in a home game against Georgia (with Champ Bailey and Quincy Carter) thanks to Lou Tepper's D. The rest of that year went steadily downhill, resulting in a 4-7 record, and DiNardo was fired with one game left.

It cracks me up to see posters acting like we just became nationally competitive in 2003.

To be fair, we finished top 10 in the AP twice between 1980-2000. We finished unranked 12 times.

In the 18 years since 2000 we have finished top 10 in the AP 8 times (counting this year) and unranked 3 times.

ETA: we had 10 losing seasons in that same 20 year period, and none since 2000.

UF was LSU's Bama in the 90's

LSU was also ranked inside the top 10 in '98 before the wheels came off against UGA.

The most frustrating loss was Auburn when Diesel created his legend. He had like 230 yards on about 20 or so carries and should have had more. DiNardo decided to pass on third and two when a first down would have essentially sealed the victory. Imagine that team if Diesel hadn’t broken his leg.

I remember Cecil was leading the country in rushing after 4 weeks and he had only played in 3 games. And it was against pretty tough defenses-AU, Vandy, and Miss State if I recall. Loved that guy.

I really liked DiNardo, but Tepper was mind boggling awful!

DiNardo sealed his fate when he ran off Morris Watts and Carl Reese in successive years. Both those guys took lateral jobs.

For that 27-0 win over Bama at their place, the Bama fans had almost completely left the stadium. We were sitting in the Bama student section (visiting friends that went to Bama) and had made it up to the front row after everybody left. Late in the game, Faulk had a long TD run with multiple O-Line Tigers that crossed the goal line around the same time as Faulk. The 15 or so LSU fans sprinkled through the student section had all got together on that front row in the 4th quarter.

The 27-0 beat down was in Tuscaloosa.

It was a wacky 2 years. In 1996 Alabama beat LSU 26-0 in Baton Rouge. I was living in Birmingham at the time. I had traveled to LSU for the game. Got a speeding ticket on the way home. A very bad weekend, lol.

The crazy thing is that team went 8-3 overall, 6-2 in SEC play and only went to the Independence Bowl... as the 15th ranked team in the country.

This year's team went 9-3 and went to the Fiesta Bowl as the 11th ranked team.

That just goes to show you how watered down bowl season has really become. In 1997 there were "only" 20 bowl games and many thought that was far too much. This year there were 40 games and the Independence Bowl had 8-4 Temple vs. 7-5 Duke (both unranked)

1997 was a frustrating, roller coaster season. Collins runs wild vs. Auburn, but LSU still loses. They need a blocked extra point to beat Vandy in a game where Collins breaks his leg...only to come back the next week and upset #1 Florida...then follow that up by getting thumped by Ole Miss in a uninspired 11:30 am JP game.

Two weeks later they crush Alabama on the road, then lose the next week to a 4-5 Notre Dame team in a cold, wet, Tiger Stadium.

84-88 was actually THE most wins in any five years in program history.

45 games. They won that many between 2010-2013 (That's only 4 years).

From 2009-2013 they won 54 games. From 2003-2007 they won 56.

Are you sure 1984-1988 wasn't the highest winning percentage or something like that?

Im pretty sure they went to higher paying gigs. (Reese was poached by texas I think, and that was the beginning of the end for Dinardo). This was before LSU was willing to pay to keep coaches. If anything Gerry was too loyal to his assistants, similar to Les Miles.

Expectations were different.

Florida owned the SEC, it didn't matter if you were ranked high or not- they were still expected to win 40-7.

And the way we did it was exciting the crowd even more... the 3rd down "blitz package" (they ran a whole new defense on the field), etc. Everybody was jumping up and down all game. Like that commercial where the kids are running around yelling "he's finally gonna do it"

Yep, remember that. Lost to Auburn at home and dropped to 14 and then beat #1 Florida in that famous game. That was a talented team.

We absolutely shite the bed the next week in the 2nd half vs Ole Miss.

Plus, as has already been pointed out, the OP isn’t looking at the official rankings.

We started the year #10, and had already lost and ranked 14 when we beat #1 UF.

It was absolutely a field storming occasion.

Yep, I saw Shaun Alexander run for a quarter mile that night. It sucked.
