If you could choose between Riley or Kelly
Who would it be?
I would have chose Riley before, but after doing research on Kelly, he may be the better of the two.
So, taking that into account, Riley vs Kelly:
age: Riley, with a caveat. He's a lot younger, but that makes him way more likely to move to the NFL. I can't see Kelly doing this. So they might coach here the same amount of time.
record: Push. Riley has a great record at Oklahoma, Kelly a similarly great record at Notre Dame.
Schemes/philosophy: push again. Riley clearly has a much more potent offensive scheme in play at Oklahoma; but defense for him has been optional at best.
Kelly seems to have a traditional focus, wants to have a good D to go with a solid offense. Broader approach.
accomplishments: This goes to Kelly, as Riley has just rode Stoop's success and tweaked it some. Kelly made his name at Cincy (Fickell?), then moved to Notre Dame and, if anything, improved his reputation. I'm curious to see if Riley can take USC and improve it; I'm curious to see if Napier is able to handle Florida too.
Kelly isn't as sexy a hire, but I'm also more confident he can run LSU the way it should be. I'm hoping early Miles level of success- 10-2 average, strong challenge annually for the West.
Attitude: this also goes to Kelly, stepping into the SEC when he could have sat comfortably at Notre Dame winning 10-11 games a year until he retired. Even before the hire, he took a home-and-home with UGA, home-and-home with Michigan, played at Oklahoma a few years ago, signed off on the single-year entry to the ACC in 2020 (and split with Clemson that year). Say what you want about Notre Dame, they do seem to try to play who they can.
Riley- even before he bailed on the team, it was questionable how much he wanted to play in big games. Yeah, he did go win at Ohio State, impressive for anyone. Not sure who else they played in his tenure in the regular season.
I think Kelly is the better coach, and the better hire with one caveat- I hope he wants to coach, and didn't just cash in. That's the only reason I think he would fail here.
One last thing about their demeanors-
Riley bitching when Baylor kicked the FG... that reminded me of Petrino when Les pounded his arse in 2011.
Kelly took his losses like a man, though I'm sure they ate his arse up.
I don't think the media is doing our opponents any favors by ragging on him right now. I think if he didn't have a chip on his shoulder before, he will now.

After seeing what LSU did to Riley in ATL in 2019 I didn’t want him here. He’s a bit of a little bitch IMO

Yeah I catch some primadonna vibes with that fella. He'll soak it all in in SoCal.

The question is do you want old school, balanced Gen X football or new school Millennial flag football.

Give me the guy that has built and sustained a winner over the guy who was born on 3rd base and still hasn’t reached home. Lincoln Riley was handed a winner.

Better location

Kelly checks all the boxes except age so, his longevity is a concern. Kelly has rebuilt multiple programs. Lincoln was gifted with a silver spoon in mouth career. Riley’s style and teams are soft. Give me Kelly every time.

I don’t think Kelly will win a NC here. I am not convinced he will make the playoffs.
Bookmark this if you like and call me out if it happens.
Or don’t because I will eat crow if he does it.

Exactly:
Maybe you would rather live somewhere else, the majority of people would definitely choose living there over Baton Rouge. Especially If your salary gives you availability to get the very best homes and locations.

If it's all about location, you'd think Saban would've worked his way over there some time ago. The truth of the matter is that there's much more to it than that, for a discerning, forward looking, driven football coach.

I am Pretty sure I listed about 10 reasons.
Didn’t say all about locations.

So why isn't Saban over there? Being celebrated in "beautiful" sunny Southern California, being put on a pedestal with celebrity status? And yeah, also being aware of the other factors you mentioned. I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that had he wanted that job, he could've had it a few times by now. Yet chooses Tuscaloosa instead.
I'd say it's because he landed right where he believed was the best place to win a whole bunch of championships. Which of course happens to be in the SEC, not any other conference.

You are right. Everybody has different factors that go into where they decide to live and work. Looking at it from an unbiased perspective SC would considered to be the better job tor the majority of people.

Kelly…appreciate is focus on the importance of the “backbone”. Of the team…the OL and DL. If there is one thing reinforced about this year’s team, You can have all the sexy specialty position talent in the world, but if your line play is limited (OL particularly), you will have problems winning consistently. Kelly has a reputation of building strong backbones in Offensive linemen.

I will agree with you that it's a better place in Riley's specific case.

I will take a coach willing to take on a challenge rather than run from it.

The biggest critique against Kelly has been his lack of success when it comes to landing and developing QB's. Coming to ND he had a reputation as a developer of QB's.
