Shepard would've put up insane numbers if he had signed with Oregon to play in Chip Kelly's offense.
Insane int. numbers and insane incompletions.

Hoping he would succeed, we put Shepard in every position and situation possible. He just seemed to have a case of the ‘yips’.

Has this ever been discussed on tRant?
I don’t know if this is a troll or someone who wasn’t around when this was asked every fricking day for 4 years.

Yep watched Finley in H.S. in a game against a bottom dweller and all they did was make him run around and attempt throws while on the run. He would try to force balls is because he thought his arm strength would be the difference.
Ponchatoula tended to win games in spite of Finley. Hank simply would outcoach most teams in close games.

OBJ had a better arm and was every bit as electric. Maybe he should have started over Zach M.
Just because someone was recruited out of high school at a certain position doesn’t mean they will play it in college ask Devin White.

Don’t even try. I tried to explain to these ppl why TJ Finley couldn’t make it at QB at LSU and all they was call me names. Finley has cinder blocks for feet and is not accurate with any pressure at all on him and he is a poor leader. But no one wanted to hear it.
Not worried if they don’t see it. Just look at the outcome.

Love the guy. But he had no chance at all of being a successful SEC QB.

I just wanted to see a double reverse pass one time! He didn’t need to throw it every game just the fear he would.

I was there for his first spring game when he got to play QB. It was not good in any way shape or form

Really wouldn't have mattered in Les' offense.
But, instead CLM developed a raw kid into a SEC receiver. Russell was small, without elite speed or strength, average hands and wasnt a great route runner.
He went undrafted into the NFL, competing against some of world's greatest athletes, and ended up having a terrific career.
Mr. Shepard, is a LSU legend in my mind. As a high school kid, he was ranked #1 overall. Both he and CLM expected him to play and play well as a freshman.
Looked like Les had found his QB. Every school wanted Russell and Miles was the one that reeled him in.
But, Russell wasnt a SEC QB. He could be a gadget guy back there but could never master that position in a pro style offense.
How hard he had to work at both LSU and the NFL to be a success, should be told in the LSU archives to all who visit.
He couldve blamed the coach and quit or become a distraction for the team. Many wouldve folded and blamed anyone but the reality after such a dramatic fall in expectations for such a young man.
He fought like hell to be a success, and his perseverance and mental toughness is as good as it gets.

He reportedly came out the first day of camp and looked like absolute dogshit throwing the ball.

I believe that Russel ask to play another portion other than QB. He was tried at RB and then WR

My question is: how was he so highly rated as a qb in high school if he couldn’t throw and didn’t have elite speed? Did they just overlook his shortcomings in lieu of stats??

We didn’t have a play of that great distance(40yds) in Less’s day, unless it was a defensive TD or Fake FG

You nailed it. The ratings guys back then sold subscriptions. They were much better at that than rating players. Shep was never a five star QB.

Jontre Kirklin Is a better QB than Russell Shepard and it isn’t close.
