Business is business. There is no problem firing coaches during the season.

Blame the NCAA for the timing of signing day. It is a necessary evil.

Most coaches have quit on their teams. That is how they advance in coaching.
A lot of players quit on their teams for the moola. What do you think about them?

Quitting ahead of a (non-CFP) bowl game? Who cares? Many of the players don't want to be there anyway and the timing of the recruiting schedule makes it necessary for a HC to jump into his new job.

Quitting ahead of a CFP game would be a different story.

quote:

He did at Notre Dame. They were headed to the playoffs and he quit.

They weren't headed to the playoffs. There were ranked 6th in the CFP poll before the conference championship games. ND's season was over. There was an outside chance they could make the CFP. But they needed multiple teams ahead of them to lose in the conf. championship game

If Kiffin leaves OM he isn't quitting on his team. He could easily coach out the season but OM is forcing his hand.

But the reality is that the college football coaching world operates on a completely different timeline. The hiring cycle, the early signing period, and recruiting windows all happen before the season officially ends for a lot of teams. Schools want their next coach in place immediately, and coaches know that if they wait, the job won’t still be there. It’s a business decision one that’s often cold and unpopular, but very normal in the industry.

That doesn’t mean players don’t feel abandoned or that it’s “good” for a coach to walk out early. Most people would agree it’s bad optics and it stings emotionally. But from the coach’s perspective, leaving early is usually about timing and job security, not character.

So yes, it sucks for the team and fans. But it’s also the system these moves happen in and until the calendar changes, this kind of thing will keep happening.

that's wonderfully idealistic, but it's the real world out there.
