nothing is worse than the troy loss. Win or lose to UCF, this season was an improvement. With a W, it's a big improvement. With an L, it's only a slight improvement and he's not moving the program forward fast enough. This game means a lot in terms of how Coach O will be viewed in seasons to come. Hopefully we play to win instead of getting conservative. If we score 45+ points (in regulation), we should win pretty handily, but if our offense lets them hang around like they let A&M hang around, they have the offensive scheme and fire power to make us pay.

Here is the deal. He has a contract with miltiple years left. He hasn’t proven he has made a step-change with the program from the previous coach. Give him another year to do that. If there is marked improvement against the same level or better competition, then discuss the extension. If not, force his hand to make changes.

But here is the problem. Without an extension how can he sell himself to recruits? You can believe that coaches that are competing for recruits against us can put that bug in their ear.

I don't think the UCF bowl game should be the barometer of a coach's ability to lead the program. Sadly, with the CFP (and the BCS) taking all the attention, plus all the noise about star players sitting out bowls, non-CFP bowl games have really lost their luster in recent years. Coaches are on to recruiting, players are on to combine prep etc. On the other side, UCF's sole obsession is their undefeated record and their claim that no one respects them and they should get a shot at the playoff. While Coach O is, if nothing else, a very good motivator, it's pretty foreseeable that UCF will be treating this game like their Super Bowl and LSU will be disappointed to be here.

All that said, I don't think there is any reason to extend Coach O this year. He has a big buyout clause and is not being talked about for any other high profile jobs at schools that could pay the buyout and give him a raise. By all accounts, head coach at LSU was Coach O's dream job and he wants to be at the school as long as possible. Someone would have to give a HUGE contract to convince him to leave LSU this quickly, and there's no doubt in my mind that he would give LSU a chance to raise/extend his contract before he left.

Well, maybe UCF and Bama have something in common after all. Perhaps every team sees LSU as their super bowl.

Agreed- no extension regardless. He’s not leaving anytime soon on his own. He doesn’t deserve an extension in my opinion.

so does that mean Texas has to extend Herman this year as well?
he signed a 5 year deal the same week O did.

He should get no extension until he wins the west, Alleva should be fired for the ridiculous buyout and for even mentioning an extension

this is WAY overplayed. Recruits aren’t guaranteed 4 years. They are given a year to year scholarship and Hanks to the Head Ball Coach when he was at UF.

This kind of shite is for losers not winners...

Win or lose, no extension. Win and a bonus, sure. Extensions should not be passed out like participation trophies.

He has to unleash the power of the binders first. We have not seen that on the field yet. His record is not better than the guy he replaced. That guy was "holding us back". We need the binders to come through.

If he losses to UCF we should fire him on the spot and start from scratch... No need in getting another 8-4 9-3 season again next year... Cut your losses IF you want to be an elite program.........

Our roster is better than UCF's. If we lose, it is because the coaching is not good enough.

The fact is that our roster is better than all but one team on our schedule every year. And A&M is closing the talent gap big time. Losing to UCF is inexcusable.

It's been said over and over, beating one top 5 team does nothing if we lose to Bama, and we drop a couple of others we have no business dropping.

shouldn't get an extension for winning ten games either.

maybe 3 straight 10 win seasons or some such, but not one.

Realistically, they can just extend him under his same pay rate (he hasn’t earned more) and simply spread what’s left of his buyout across the rest of the years. He should get no further buyout money. His previous buyout was egregious in how much it was, so leave it at the current amount.

Herman took freaking UT from a losing record to their conference championship game in less time than O has had with a team that was ranked in the top 25 the last years prior to him.

In the end, he doesn’t deserve an extension, but if a fake extension makes it easier to recruit, so be it.

Alleva unfortunately will do everything to keep O since he is what his own job is riding on. That is why LSU is in a horrible position. Alleva will not so what is best for the program if needed, which is why he should be fired.

I tend to agree with you. An extension to me is largely ceremonial and to protect against negative recruiting. The key is the size of the buyout. As long as that reflects the absolute lack of demand for Ed Orgeron in the head coaching marketplace, I’m ok with an extension of the standard rollover variety. Give him something that allows him to project program stability and save face- and nothing more.

i fully expect alleva to dodge this by doing an extension and raise with HUGE unnecessary buyout just before then.

its sorta his trademark way to always do the wrong thing at the wrong time.

He shouldnt get one regardless. He needs to show something worthy of an extension. He has not in two yrs.
