It doesn't make any sense no matter how you slice it. People will argue that coaches could negatively recruit by showing he's under contract for "only" 3 more years and that we can extend it without a raise or without increasing buyout. But couldn't those same coaches negatively recruit against us by showing that the buyout is still the same and we can cut ties whenever? It's a nonsensical argument. The best barometer of a coach's job security is the direction of the program and the perception of the same. If O is the ace recruiter we've been told he is, he should be able to lock down a great class without empty gestures like extending his contract for no reason.

2019 should be the make or break season. We will have a stacked roster with a combination of talent AND experience. If we don't see that team seriously compete for the SECC and a playoff spot I don't think our current staff ever will.

If it's an extension in name only (i.e. the added year's salary isn't guaranteed), then I don't give a shite about giving him an "extension".

However, if Alleva guarantees more money on a coach who literally has no other market outside of LSU, then it's just another instance in a string of dumb decisions made by LSU's AD.

Expect another 9 wins next year too. It’s what we’ve become.

Joe better hurry up and lock Ed down, before Ohio State comes calling.

Why should he get an extension if we win?

If we extend Zero for going 9-3, why did we fire Miles? Miles consistently won 9 games a year.

Agreed. Are we worried about losing him to another program? He's already under contract. Why extend him and give him more money? Hope the guy continues to do well but if not, a contract extension will come back to bite us. This just isn't necessary.

The AD could not care less about what you think. That’s a fact

The negative recruiting approach is a really weak argument for extending O.

LSU fired Miles and a big reason to hiring O was to keep the recruiting class in tact..

LSU, while established, will still recruit itself.. and if anything a coaching change would bring about positive excitement to the program. I don't believe recruits in love with LSU are exactly committing to this HC.. I think it's more about the winning tradition, nfl success, the culture, and the tremendous atmosphere.

As long as LSU is winning, LSU will recruit well. IMHO.

How about we just wait to see how it plays out before we start talking hypotheticals?

According to some here, the extension will come before the bowl game will be played. If that happens, waiting to voice opinions or make LSU AD aware of LSU fans opinion will have been a major cluster frick.

Not that Alleva gives a shite how the fans feel.

Nevermind, Alleva thinks this has been a great season for LSU. 10-3 or 9-4 is now great seasons for LSU football. It seems clear now that Alleva wanted Les gone for personal reasons. It had nothing to do with wanting LSU to produce championship teams again.

Not sure why people care about the extension, it's just not that important.

As many say, it's done to show stability in recruiting, but it won't stop us from firing him any sooner or later IMO.

So, any opposing coach worth half a shite could still use the same negative recruiting tactics against LSU by showing his buyout didn't increase and we can still cut ties just as easily. Again, the recruiting angle is such a weak argument, I'm amazed people still bring it up.

Agreed!
Two reasons I see you extend early:

Schools showing interest in your coach and you can’t afford to risk losing him

Coach expressing interest In other jobs.

Don’t see either of these things happening.

I don't think he should get one even if we beat UCF.

Why give an extension so early on in the contract to a coach that no school will try to compete you for?

I get the whole recruiting argument, but the simple answer is "when we win, O gets an extension." Why potentially put the University in a bind if he flops in year 3?

i don't think he should get one, win or lose.

let next year play out. zero excuses. have to beat a&m and uf. those two schools look like trouble in the making and we're already losing to them.

bama, auburn, uf and a&m. that's our measuring stick now. we didn't do worth a shite this year against them. i'll take a wait and see approach on our record against those 4 next year. if it's 2-2, coach O needs to kick rocks.

will have the best roster/experience returning that we've had in three years. i wanna see if O is up to it, or if it's just another 1-3 run against our main competition.

Exactly. Miles got extension because of the interests from Michigan and Arkansas. I don't see any P5 program pursuing O.

I am also curious that if 9-3 means exceeded expectation and warrants an extension, would 7-5 become acceptable? How about 6-6?
