Hypothetical scenario: SEC BIG10 merger

Let’s play hypotheticals for a minute:
SEC and Big10 decide this is the last straw with the whole Texas tech sorsby thing. They decide we’re forming our own league. A version of the NFC / AFC. Screw everyone else. We only play each other and have our own playoff.
You get 1 permanent Big10 opponent and 2 rotating opponents then 9 SEC games to make 12 total.
Who would LSU fans want as that permanent? I’d imagine many Big10 teams would want LSU as their permanent opponent so they can use it as a recruiting advantage.
Personally I would go with USC or UCLA. If they aren’t down then give me Washington or Oregon.

I think we should bring back 12 team conferences.

I’d be fine with just going back to 2012 and adding Texas and Oklahoma instead of the great value versions of them in tamu & mizzou

You’re on to something

It’s definitely too late for that. Not going back for sure. Definitely not.

They’ll all be divisions in a league soon

Maybe one in the Northeast, one in the mid west, and one through the Great Plains down into Texas also.

I think we should do a hard reset and put things back to how they were in 2000.

The SEC and Big 10 won’t ever merge but I do agree we eventually going to two mega conferences.
Maybe something like
SEC+ACC and whoever else
Vs
Big 10+Big 12 and whoever else

The ACC and big12 are just so watered down. Take out Clemson fsu and Miami, who in the ACC really matters?
Big12 doesn’t have any big names now

I would say you go to 48 teams, 16 sec, 16 big ten, notre dame, and 15 teams from the ACC and Big 12.
48 teams makes for a good bracket for basketball and baseball and then you could do a true 16 team playoff for football

It will happen but it will be 30-40 teams.
Their own media contracts
Their own rules
Their own commissioner
Their own playoff format
They will rule the sport
It Will Happen.

I assume this new league would have ALL the sports and not just football.

I fully believe that both conferences will expand to about 24 teams and their champions will meet for national championships like in the major pro sports.
Probably 3/4 games within your conference with the other 1/4 against Big 10 schools.

A friend of mine has been saying this for years. The Cruz-Cantwell Bill in the Senate specifically prohibits this, though.

I think it’s only a matter of time before all the conferences merge into a super conference and the the NCAA goes away.

There's not really any big 10 schools that would be that appealing to play every year other than the obvious OSU/Michigan. Penn State would be fun to visit once. I guess Wisconsin might be a fun trip every other year. I don't care for an Oregon USC or UCLA series and we already go to Omaha too often to want to go to Nebraska for football. Maybe Iowa? Just bc I enjoy their style of play and like watching their games

This'll never happen but indulging it, it's not the sexy pick, but Wisconsin is the obvious pick. Drink off every year

If this were to happen, I'd assume the smaller schools would continue playing in a true collegiate league without all the NIL and transfer BS. It would be interesting to see if that would have any unintended consequences of shifting some people to watching small school sports to get the collegiate feel again
