I think that people considered Les to be such an idiot that O couldn’t possibly screw it up. “LSU recruits itself”, “anyone can win here”. People forgot their history…..or just never knew it.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I remember being somewhat happy after we lost to Florida in 2016 because I thought it meant that at least Coach O would not get the job. Then, I remember him being announced as the coach the next day and I screamed Noooo at the top of my lungs. I think the stupid fans were happy because he was “one of us.” I don’t think he was a popular hire and be careful listening to the vocal minority.

not very popular at all. this place was a dumpster fire through 2017. Especially when we lost to Troy. Things got better in 2018 and by 2019 everyone claimed to support O from the beginning.

He wasn't a popular hire.

Only a few wanted him, more then backed him because that is what fanbases generally do once a hire is made. If its underwhelming they bitch as they should and then as the media hype train rolls they give the coach a chance.

That Florida game should have been a huge red flag to what he really is. First he lost his cool in the pregame with the squall between the teams, decides to play fournette even though he was hurt in an absolutely emotional decision and not a strategic decision. Then with the sugar bowl on the line against a banged up team he snatches defeat from the jaws of victory

I don’t see how anyone could have been happy about the hire. He was horrible at Ole Miss, and never ran a program again, until LSU hired him. It baffles me as to how Joe Alleva thought he was a legitimate candidate, after Jimbo and Herman turned LSU down. I’ll be glad when it’s ove.

Orgeron was not a popular hire at all, not on here at least. The melt was enormous.

because jimbo wasnt worth $70 million asking price and herman chose texas so there were no other choices that stood out as must haves, so aleva took the easy out and just hired ed

it was not a popular hire but that is just part of the reason aleva got fired, he made so many bad decisions that nothing could save him so he had to go. in hindsight its a blessing because woodward is making very smart choices with who gets hired now

This. Everyone was pissed at Alleva acting like a child when negotiating with Herman.

This question deserves a more serious answer.
The LSU AD and the entire university ( as I recall) gave full throated support.
Jindal, his BOS, and, more directly, Alleva celebrated this move.
This effort was not unusual. It happens whenever a new HC is chosen.
This kind of PR effort is designed to create the impression that a New King has been divinely appointed .
Long Live the King!
Except, if you are willing to examine the facts, the King is a buffoon.
A few folks saw thru the theatre.

I hated it even when he won in 2019 cause it was obvious what was going to happen. I hated the Les hire from day 1 and never believed in him long-term either.

Most didn't initially support O but those that did can be summed up below.

Because people are short-sighted and saw some basic success in 2016 that likely happens if Cam Cameron is removed.

O is not a good head coach. He is and has always been a Rah-Rah guy, which only works well for something like an interim position. Outside of that he is useless and most of us knew this.

Somehow, people were naive enough to buy his BS sales pitch and just were happy to be out from under Les' tenure at LSU. Then, just like Aleva, they were too weak-willed to accept being turned down by Herman, so went with O because of the "He's one of us" BS.

Fact is that most LSU Fans are not bright football minds and use emotion rather than logic to make their decisions. This is true of any fan base, and people that think just being able to recruit top players is enough. They ignored the development Miles' players showed and assumed that just by finding a guy that gets talent here would fix the problems.

Ironically, these same people would say that Hillary Clinton's epic failures as SOS made her unqualified to be President (she was unqualified for many other reasons), while O's epic failures at Ole Miss was just a learning experience.

Again, people are just too emotional and so was Aleva. His arrogance is why LSU is at this point.
