How close do you think we are, realistically?

Listening to Josh Pate and him talking about the SEC Championship Game this weekend got me wondering that.

He was saying that UGA-Bama is really the biggest rivalry in the game right now. It’s different than the Iron Bowl and UM-OSU in that it doesn’t have the history, etc. but that it’s the most important game in the sport right now. And how 8 of the last 10 SEC winners have been either UGA or Bama, etc.

It got me wondering about us, and how close we are to them. We’re certainly a tier below at the moment. However, I don’t think that it’s unattainable for this program to get to that level. Some changes need to be made on the staff, absolutely (looking at you entire defensive staff). I think our (defensive) recruiting needs to be more urgent and take a step, yes. But I don’t think that they’re so far above everyone else that we can’t even see the top of the pyramid.

And, I know something has to happen that is really completely out of our control in that Saban needs to retire. He’s slowed down, but he’s still the best in the business.

What are y’all’s thoughts? Do y’all think we’re far off from reaching the heights of Alabama and Georgia? I’m not talking about a one off year like 2019. I’m talking about the program taking a step forward to where we get to the level of never winning fewer than 10 games for an extended period of seasons type of success level.

You kind of answered your own question. Hiring an elite staff on the defensive side of the ball who can recruit and develop defensive linemen and DB’s like we’re used to seeing at LSU.

2 years.

Offense and offensive recruiting is already there. Defense was in shambles since 2020 we are reaping the consequences of what O did.

2-3 years away and that is with a strong finish in recruiting this year (need a couple of key flips and a few key portal signings) and next. Conservatively, 2025 at least. 2026 would be a safer bet.

Honestly I think we are 2 maybe 3 years away from being on Bama and UGAs level.

I think next year will be similar to this year but the defense will (hopefully) be a little better and the offense will probably be a bit worse. I would say sneaking into the 12 team playoff would be a great year.

Then in 2025 with a senior Nuss we could have a real shot at a title. This is fully reliant on the defense improving to being slightly above average at worst.

In 2026 and beyond, I expect to be a regular in the 12 team playoff and to challenge for/win the title every few years.

If its 2026 and we still haven't taken a step forward from where we are now, then I think it'll be time to thank BK for steadying the program and going to find someone else that can win it all.

I think we’re going to suck next year. But I think we’re going to have a really big recruiting class for 2025 and will turn it around then

This year, we are a decent D away.

Next year, who knows? I think we could be ok with Nuss being less mobile as we will have the best OL in the country.

But we must shore up the DL and pray the DBs mature.

Next year looks a lot like 2017 to me. Breaking in a lot of new starters so we will probably drop a game or 2 that we shouldn't but we will also win a game or 2 that we shouldn't as well.

I think we are very close. We would like to redo the 4th quarter in the 3 that we lost. We were right there going into the 4th in each loss. The way I see it we need a little more in two of the 3 phases.

Saban s pretty much done. I don’t see him coaching in 25. We need to stack some great classses and keep them here. It’ll be wide open now w a few 6-8 seeds making noise every year.

Georgia had all the potential similar to LSU for years. They underacheived because of meh coaches. With Kirby, Georiga is an elite program. LSU has similar dynamics in place. Time will tell. If I had to make a projection, no but every few years LSU will contend.

I usually like Josh Pate, but I called JP out on X for his bias towards the Aggies. The Aggies and Josh shared a major sponsor with The Academy. I noticed lately, Academy hasn't been part of JP's pods. Every time I called him out on his bias, he immediately replied with weak-arse comebacks and spin. Horns fans caught on too and they were calling him out on his Aggie bias. I believe Academy was paying Pate to promote the Aggies and it showed in his pod content. Now I don't see Academy's logo on the big screen for his pods like his pods from prior. I think he lost his sponsorship.

You can't be very close. You always want to build from the lines out in the sec.

Brad Davis has absolutely killer it since he has been here. No worries there.

The interior d line doesn't have many reinforcements in the pipeline.

For this recruiting class they have 1 3 star kid and 1 3 star juco commit.

Could you ever pathom Georgia or Bama having a class like that? Answer is no. Cause that is how you win.

Qb. O line. D line. You have to be able disrupt the other teams qb. Lsu couldn't even do that this year with Wingo and some upperclassmen.

I don't think LSU is going to "suck" next year. But I do think they will take a bit of a step back (somewhat similar to 2020...but NOT that drastically because LSU doesn't have a moron as a HC). I have confidence Nussmeier can be a good QB, but you don't just replace a guy with 40+ starts who can carry an offense damn near by himself PLUS two game-breaking first round talent WRs.

The defense should be improved, because it can't get much worse, but I think 7.5 wins will probably be the preseason O/U. Best case scenario is LSU exceeds expectations, wins 9 games, and sneaks their way into the 12-team CFP. More likely is 2024 is a build-up year to a legitimate contender in 2025

He got called out by everyone when he said A&M was a better job than Ohio State so that makes sense. I like Pate but he’s no different than any other media person who has a bias and people who say he calls it like it is are just being naive. He’ll promote anything if he’s getting paid to do so, or he will not discuss controversial plays during a game if it involves a certain team because his relationship partner happens to work for said team.

His assessment of Dallas Turner’s hit on Jayden Daniels was fricking atrocious.
