I want to talk running game also. But do you limit jones touches so he is fresh for ole miss. The first tool you buy is a hammer. And he is by far our best hammer.

I think sam will run less as they get timing down on passing better.

That would be optimal

to an extent yes. And give the end of third to Clark to run the offense. I was impressed with him last week.

Play Clark instead. If we get behind then go to Leavitt

I think they need to get berry and durham into the mix more. Both to not have jones worn for the game.. but they need him in the offense long term this season. And both offer different components then jones. Run game could become our bread and butter with 3 ready to contribute

Two can play at that.
Would be nice to see Walker Howard take some snaps next week.

Gage is clearly ahead of Berry and Durham, so not sure why you didn’t mention him. And one of the biggest reasons is his pass protection. He was in in the 1st and 2nd quarters a good bit Saturday just for pass pro.

I agree that we need to protect both Jones and Leavett some. Their styles won’t survive a 16-game season, which is what we all hope we have. But the Ole Miss game is not the only game on the schedule. And we need to use the Tech game to work on both the passing game and the running game. Lane was apparently not all that happy with our guard play, so he’s gonna go with the 1s as long as he feels he needs to improve on that.

Also, Tech runs a pretty unique 3-3 with different looks that will be good for the 1s to go against. I do think we’ll need both Berry and Durham to be contributors this year. I think Berry’s role will be more in the short passing game or creative runs. I don’t think he’s gonna line up directly behind the QB like a traditional tailback. Not big and strong enough for what Lane and Weis like to do, and he’s not good in pass pro. Same with Durham. It may take the coaches a while to figure out how to best use them.

But I don’t think they’ll have much problem going with Jones and Gage as their 1 and 2 most of the season if they think that’s what’s best. They normally don’t play a lot of backs. But Berry and Durham are both talented and offer a different skillset. They’ll figure out a way to utilize them. May even be saving a special package with them for the Ole Miss game.

Also, I’m not sure it’s as much of a given as some of you that the game will be over at halftime and we can play the whole 2nd half with backups. Their defense was pretty legit last season.

It sounds like the team could convert Berry to being a slant type receiver that Landry was a while back. We need Berry to get significant touches in the open space to utilize his speed. He is a linebacker worst nightmare in the open spaces.
