I will say top 3 with confidence. I would argue Dorsey and Peterson also in the top 3 with Mathieu. You could make an arguement for any of them as the best defensive player ever at LSU.

Peterson was great but I don’t think he could takeover a game like TM7 or Dorsey.

I'll agree with that. The raw talent of Peterson was completely absurd, though. I remember thinking that he was the only guy that could cover Julio Jones during that time frame.

#1 play maker.

Defensive connotation unnecessary.

I have never seen a defensive player as dynamic as Honey Badger. What he continuously did was unexplainable at times. For me he is easily the #1 defensive player we have ever had and is in the same conversation as Burrow and Daniels as best to have played for us.

i think that is one of the reasons Tyrann was so amazing

It’s hard for CBs to consistently change games because at some point they stop throwing your way.

but TM7 could rush the passer, he was like a strong safety when he came up in run support and just an uncanny ability to get the football.

I say two, I’ll take Patrick Peterson over him. Should have won the Heisman in 11.

Badger is #1. Best defender I ever saw play live. Obviously, PP would be my #1 corner to cover their #1 receiver, but the Badger was worth points on the board.

Disruptive, active, aggressive, hateful, dogged, "got to have that ball", just the personsification of everything you want in a defender's mindset.

(ETA: If I could have put Mathieu's brain in Peterson's body, they would have had to change the rules of football, because whoever had that guy would win everything, every time. )

I've never considered him great beyond that. Sure, he played awhile in the NFL, even made some all pro teams, but I never considered him as an impact player in the pros. That doesn't detract from his season. But for a career, no.

Making the All-Decade team for the 2010’s is a phenomenal accomplishment.

It’s funny because his numbers are half a notch below Troy Polamalu, who’s considered one of the greatest defensive players of all time. Weird, huh?

Congrats. Maybe dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this board and that’s bold.
That's all fine, I don't care

I'm also a Saints fan, and never feared facing him when he was on the opponent, and he was just ok as a Saint.

He had 2 impressive seasons, played 11 NFL. He was capable, he wasn't the same game-changer he had been at LSU.

He was All-Pro 4 times and All-Decade. You think that happens on 2 seasons?

I just looked up his numbers, he only had 2 seasons with 5 or more interceptions.

Look, he played on 4 teams.
He was good with Arizona, but they let him go because he wanted too much after the first contract.
If he's a guy you absolutely want to build around, that doesn't happen.

One year in Houston, which was solid but not amazing.

Then KC, again he was good enough to stay the starter. Yes he got his Super Bowl rings there, but that's on Mahomes, not the defense. After 4 years, he said he wanted to stay there.... they didn't even offer him a new contract, so he came to the Saints.

I'm just of the opinion that if you're HoF good, your team will fight like hell to resign you, or at least trade you to get something back out of the deal. He filled the role and was solid. There's a difference, and that's not an insult to him. You shouldn't make HoF unless you're legendary, not just "good enough".

Actually that's exactly what he did against Bama when he went out with a cramp. Then Julio Jones took a WR screen to the house because our best player was on the sidelines.

Okay, if you want to call him out for an injury, lol.

You can also add His STs play (Punt Return and Punt Coverage) which was game changing on many occasions (To be fair, PP was a great punt returner as well)

Let us not forget that had he not had his incident in 2011 and been suspended he would have had the opportunity to play against that Auburn team we absolutely beat to smithereens.

There is close to zero chance he doesn’t get some sort of turnover or punt return stats if he plays that game.

Moreover, if not for that cloud of the suspension he likely wins and should have won the heisman that year.

Modern era football is very different than when Cassanova played (and he is definitely in the top 3 ever), but I pose a question to this thread. It’s a hypothetical (which I dislike), but IF he doesn’t get kicked off team AND he plays his junior and senior years without injury do you think there is any way he doesn’t make all america team both those years to tie Tommy C?

Guy was the biggest game changing defensive and ST player in LSU history.
