He doesn't have good enough instincts to be anything but a pass rush specialist in obvious passing downs. Which is what he's always been, he just happened to be a game wrecker his freshman year at it.

I am not going to bash him like most folks here. However:

He doesn’t have a position

He’s a bit of a one trick pony (acceleration and burst)

He doesn’t have great cover skills

He never developed a pass rush move

He definitely did not play with full effort at certain times

Add all that up and you’ve are looking at a 6-7 round pick or UFA. As others have said, he should have played one more year in college if he could. Would have made more money

Well said.

He single handedly beat the Razorbacks backup QB (who finished his career as a Sun Belt backup receiver) in his first and only collegiate start with an all time performance

I mean, he still had to get to the QB and get the sacks and fumbles. No one else did that. And he was SEC defensive player of the week the game before against top 5 Bama. He was great when he was great, but after his freshman year, he just wasn't great.

He has Laron Landry’s build. I might waste a late round pick to see if he could play SS.

Made substantially easier when it’s a QB who has no idea how to avoid him. KJ knew how to run that offense and was not easy to sack

Not trying to be anything special here but I always thought he was a one-trick pony that never really translated to the NFL. Reminded me a lot of Mingo; great at speed rush and simple gap assignments but outside of that not very versatile.

When they tried moving him into a true LB role it exposed his weaknesses. Not sure if it was a preparation issue or he didn't have the natural instincts or what, but his size limited him at the line.

He’s just not the prototypical LB. He’s 6’0, 218, not physical enough inside, he’s not a safety, too small for the edge.

Landry looked and played like Tarzan. Perkins looks like a lean Tarzan and hits/tackles like Jane. That comparison is already offensive to Landry, when you add in effort which Landry gave in spades it’s even worse

Much less mental gymnastics to do what the NFL is currently doing and drafting people who already play those positions than wasting a pick on a flawed project with poor ethic

It’s pretty incredible he was very big to start at LSU, but his frame was completely filled out at that point. He had no room to grow. His measurables are awful compared to LBs. He is an enigma where his college position is not his pro position, but he’s already effectively tried his pro position and sucked at it. And he’s really not great at his college position either. It’s wild but the game outgrew him as he tried to develop into a full time role

Scheme, putting a fast player as a passrusher/spy.

As a Saints fan, I remember Alontae Taylor getting 3 sacks against Carolina one game. He's not an EDGE, he's a corner or nickel. But the Saints schemed him into a great game.

LSU basically did that a few times with Perkins, with the difference being that Perkins wasn't going to play DB on other plays.
Teams figured that out.

If he had the heart and desire he could make a decent career out of playing special teams. He has all the physical skills for that. He just seems like he doesn’t care that much on the field sometimes.

True. But he might be that one in a thousand who gets coached up to greatness. How many laughed at the Honey Badger's NFL prospects after his shitshow dismissal?

That had ZERO to do with Mathieu's ability to play football.

Point went over your head. Was saying that NFL had zero questions about Mathieu's ability to play football. Not the same for Perkins

He got hurt late in the fourth game of 2024 just making a routine tackle, and was out the rest of the season. Except for three INTs he had little to show for his play in 2025.

didn't stop the announcers for our games pumping him up every game. Its like they we're always given the note "he's great" every pre-game and just went with it.
