re: Hard to get excited about any player coming when they're only there for the money, not LSU

Great point. And we may get 5 or 10 La kids out of 100. This is not home to the other 95.

Better than the 1990s when we won like 60% of our games, were on TV 5 times a year and didnt have solid coloured endzones or the eye at midfield

Call me old fashion, but I would rather sign a 2/3 star player that loves LSU, understands the history of LSU/Tiger Stadium, the passion of the fans, the amazing tailgating and considers it an honor to wear that jersey every Saturday
Then you are saying you would rather not compete for national championships. So just say that.

and are not there just for paycheck.
Have you ever noticed that the guys asking for big paychecks aren't going to non-competitive schools? None of them are looking just for a paycheck, which is why you see guys sometimes pick a school other than the reported largest paycheck.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm just having a hard time cheering for LSU when you know a majority of the players couldn't care less about LSU
Now you're a mind reader. You really should just give up on college sports and this board in particular.

I don’t know I feel like if you have to chase a kid around and keep going up in the price he’s not going to work hard or be 100% committed

They’ve been getting paid. It’s not new. You just know more now.

You should fish on Saturdays in the fall

Lane mentioned he didn't want to rely so much on the portal. He was hired at the end of a recruiting cycle. I'm confident we'll be bringing in more Louisiana talent in the future. He could have just stayed at Ole Miss, otherwise.

I'm only at my job for the money, not because I love the employer

One of the best things I’ve learned.

The problem with your premise is your idea that pre portal/NIL, it was all "for the love of the game"
I was undergrad at LSU from 94-98, and my campus job was in the financial aid office. Back then, Pell Grants were the way the schools compensated the players, almost all of them fell under the federal thresholds and were able to get money above and beyond the scholarship
Because of that, there was a steady parade of players in and out of the office, and I got to know some of them pretty well. You'd be surprised how many guys even then could give 2 shits about LSU the school, and were there just to hopefully get a way to the NFL. Even some of the "local heroes"
Guys were being paid to show up then, you just didn't realize it as much

Not sure, I'm glad some kid from Ohio who grew up wanting to play QB for Nebraska came to LSU

Yes, you are old fashioned. Most of us are. If we win, we all look the other way. On the other hand, if these mercenaries don't win, the leash is so much shorter. Spend $30 million on new players. Let them lose 2 games and the stadium will be empty.
I'm optimistic we win.
I'm optimistic we win.

the passion of the fans, the amazing tailgating
That doesn't even enter into the equation.
They're coming to play football, maybe get a shot at the NFL and a few to get a Degree.

I think his premise was that there was an era when players chose to come LSU because they loved LSU, e.g., Kevin Faulk. Not for a generic 'love for the game '
Kevin could've gone anywhere (and UF recruited him hard when Spurrier was at the top of his game) but chose to come here. There are traces of that in Kayshon's recent interview.

I’m sure 90% of these responders and even the OP, will be celebrating with everyone else if/when the LK program wins its first CFNC

Yes, let’s go 7-5 but love our good old hometown 2-stars…
Last year something like 60% of our team was from Louisiana, you just didn’t realize it because those high priced transfers were playing…because they were better.
What was our record with those better high priced transfers?

Don’t look at it that way. You had a coach willing to go the extra mile to secure a top end talent. That’s why Kiffin was hired and so far he is delivering.

Is this why MiLB is exploding in popularity?

They were always getting paid. It is just above board now and won't lead to NCAA sanctions. And "for the love of LSU" ain't gonna win games when every other team is paying. I love teaching at my school, but would also go somewhere else for the right price. Can we stop trying to hold these players to some Ideal while the people around them rake in money on the backs of free labor.
