Not exactly.
In the past, the concern was that reputable, accredited sanctuaries would only send tigers to other reputable, accredited sanctuaries. So if LSU were to lose sanctuary status, they would only be able to source a new tiger from non-accredited, for-profit habitats/breeders. This would mean buying a tiger from one of those breeders, and therefore supporting the industry. It would be a PR nightmare given all of the exposure that industry has received lately.

… a live tiger, unless they meet specific federal requirements. LSU qualifies for an exception regardless of accreditation, as “state universities” are on the list. What this means is that LSU can’t legally source a tiger from a for-profit habitat anymore. So loss of sanctuary status = no more tigers.
