re: ESPN: LSU insiders say Alleva has wanted to hire O since day Miles fired

I have never heard the LSU Athletic Department referred to as "cash strapped". It's certainly not the case. However, I guess that's the picture they presented last year when they gave Miles the 12th hour reprieve.

I wouldn't hate it if we kept O on with Aranda..we really have great assistants throughout our program, I think we would be fine letting them do their job and letting CEO be the CEO
That may be fine for next year, but ultimately those assistants will move on and simply managing the program may not be enough. It isn't about whether Orgeron is good enough for the job, it is about whether he is the best for the job.

It's amazing how people can just write stories
Funny this came up today because on the Dan Lebatard Show they opened up talking about how on Wednesday that ESPN writers write story's about comments made by other writers in the news room. So basically they make up stories to get past hump day.

See this line of thinking is irrational to me. If you can justify keeping Orgeron on as the HC, surely Ensminger will have proven he is worth of staying on as the OC too, right?
Hell, people are giddy about the offense in the last two games, and rightfully so. However, that has very little to do with a DL coach who is the interim guy now. The fact that so many want to give him credit for that while also wanting to go get a top OC doesn't make sense to me. I'd prefer if all jobs were on the table next year and the best man available gets the gig. Going undefeated from here on out would be a great feather in the cap of the current staff, but it shouldn't mean anyone is a shoe-in as a result. Granted, Aranda is 99% likely to be the best guy for the DC spot so he's pretty much a lock to stay on if he wants to do so.

what's tougher to come across, a guy that can recruit or a greatly skilled Xs&Os guy?
Then this whole notion is dumb in general, just recruit and hire great assistants....Then WTF are we hiring him for? Fun press conferences?
Pretty much anyone we hire will be able to put together a great staff that can recruit because we pay....a lot.

No problem with keeping the staff we have. If we miss on Herman and fisher and O only lost a game or two close and we keep Aranda and Craig and hire a good OC I think Lsu would be fine. Most of the coaches mentioned have struggles all over their team. O has some experience as HC and then after getting that perspective he spends several years under Pete Carroll. All coaches have had struggles before they grow into great coaches. O could do the same

I'm good with that. Coach O is one of us and he can compete with anyone in recruiting. As long as he has good assistants and lets them do their job....frick the rest of the country.

I hope you know that this is so fricking stupid its incomprehensible.

I've said this before and I'll say it again....if O can keep Aranda and bring on a prolific modern OC (Ahem Lane Kiffin....yea I know not gonna happen) then I don't think this would be the worst move.

Unless Coach O repeats some of the stupid Miles stuff there is 90% chance that he has the job.

LSU fans criteria:
-Love the school
-Somehow find a way to hire top notch assistants with a huge budget.

I've been really critical of Joe Alleva in the past, especially in how that whole debacle played out last November. Thus far, I have to give him credit-- he is maintaining radio silence on the coaching change/search, and very few leaks have emerged from the athletic dept.
Only blip I have seen thus far was when F. King interjected that he would be involved with the search right after Alleva basically said it would be a one-man coaching search, and he would be conducting it. Hopefully, someone with a hefty checkbook has taken F. King to the side, told him to STFU, and stay out of the media spotlight.
Bottom line: when ESPN is having to pull stuff out of their arse (as they are doing here) because they have no solid leads or leaks, the coaching search is being conducted in the right way.

I could see it though. Sounds about like Alleva. Have a chance to hire an elite HC and you give the job to a DL coach.
I've seen this movie before. Next we'll hire a hot commodity from a mid major program, only to find out the real star was his quarterback.
At least we get to laugh at Atlanta for trading away another Hall of Famer.

great, then let O prove he's a "great coach" at a smaller school before handing him the keys to LSU's program.
You honestly believe LSU will hire a guy that was 3-21 in conference in his only stint as a permanent HC???

What if..... And I know it's a huge what if.... Alleva learned from last year and is feeding semi-false information? The leaking of information last year led to the retaining of Miles and whatever they had going on behind the scenes got nixed. I'd like to think that we have our coach and are simply keeping it under wraps, with this as simply a carrot in front of Orgeron to finish the year respectfully. I still think that if Orgeron wins out he would have a fair shot, but only if our top two targets turn us down. We could theoretically lose out on Herman and Jimbo, and if that happens I can really see Orgeron being given a nice hard look depending on how we finish the season.

I've asked this before and I'll ask it again - how do you justify keeping Orgeron, presumably on the basis of the first two games and the rest of the season, but still think we will need a new OC?
Posted on 10/19/16 at 12:55 pm to DmitriKaramazov
For financial reasons only he is the best hire. You save some of the assistants and get rid of that buyout. It's gonna take a major collapse to keep this from happening in my opinion. Alleva will have to find two new basketball coaches in the spring probably so he doesn't wanna tie up all his money in a football coach.

Why wouldn't Alleva want to hire O?
Hiring O means that O won enough games this year to placate boosters. Win.
Hiring O means that Alleva won't have to go through the stress and cost of searching the nation for the next coach. Win.
Hiring O means that a new coach won't demand bringing in his own staff, creating the need for Alleva to buy out and dispatch Aranda and others. Win.
Hiring O means that the highly-touted 2017 recruiting class will largely stay intact. Win.
Hiring O, a Louisiana native, means that Alleva won't be put in the pressure cooker every year with the threat of losing the big-name hire to the NFL. Win.
Other than placating the fanbase who will not be satisfied with any hire other than Saban, what incentive is there for LSU to hire someone other than a recently successful Orgeron?
Orgeron is the answer to all of Alleva's troubles. To make the hire palpable to those who can't see O in any other light than a failed Ole Miss coach, O has to keep up his end of the bargain, which is "simply" beat everybody else on the schedule, including 'Bama, to win the SEC. Neaux sweat.
