You're in California. This opinion checks out.

I want to kill a gator which I am sure some people don't think is a big deal but seems like fun to me. To each their own

As long as it's done humanely it doesn't bother me at all. But I don't get into it Myself. Although I love shooting guns

What about riding horses? If the horse rode you would you want to do it?

Pretty sure riding a horse doesn't kill the horse. Also, horses that are ridden in almost every instance have a long relationship with their rider. But for example, hiding behind trees to kill deer or in a duck blind to hunt ducks....hmmmm, hardly compares to trench warfare in WW1 does it?

I do put keeping the population of certain animals under control obviously very acceptable when if they weren't hunted the species would suffer due to its own overpopulation...not enough food, etc. That also goes to preventing some animals from causing dangerous reduction in the numbers of other species thus the predators need to be controlled. But hunting just for fun in a one-sided exercises...not very tough or brave in my book. Just an exercise in ego.

Hunting license fees protect and preserve the resource.
Hunter's help maintain the balance between the wildlife and the habitat.
Most hunters are conservationists.
And most importantly, venison roast, venison backstraps, duck gumbo, roasted duck is some damn good eating.
