No, incorrect. It has helped force teams to develop new strategies for playing defense and defending outside the arch. Example, UVA, Texas Tech, and Michigan State are in the Final Four and can defend the outside shot.

The original intent of the game was to score more points than your opponent and win the game.

I think it is much more rewarding to watch a team work the ball around for a high percentage shot than having a player just throwing up bombs from the parking lot.

Which is tougher? Making a layup after 59 passes and breaking down the defense or consistently draining a triple from 30 feet?

Traditionalist means you like things to remain the same and never evolve. That mindset must be really boring.

Absolutely.

I don't know. But maybe allowing only so many 3-point shots in a game basically maxing out the number of 3-point shots. Then you would need strategy on how are you going to use them throughout the game. Then if you go over the max number you would be assessed a technical. It would actually help some teams out. Especially the ones who can't shoot.

Do you think people are just throwing up low percentage 3s all game?

What a horrible, horrible idea.

I agree with much of what you have said but also appreciate the way the three keeps things interesting as games go down to the wire. So, my proposal would be to have three point shots count only near the end (say, last two minutes) of each half.

As big and athletic as the players are today, having the 3 point shot helps spread the floor and opens the lane up for player to dish and drive. It also makes the game more exciting in that teams are able to erase larger deficits this way. The Missouri comeback doesn't happen if there is no 3 point shot. It adds another level of strategy to the game and balances things out a bit. Do some teams rely on it too much? Yes, but the best teams have balance.

Preach

I know it will never revert, but I liked the college game better when there was no 3 pt shot, no shot clock, and defenses could force 3 second calls. And amazingly enough, we still saw teams get to the 80's and 90's at times. Considering that was always 2 pts at a time instead of going by 3's, that meant those games were paced even faster than what we see now.

I liked that we had well-defined roles for all five guys on the court, and that if you were missing one role you'd be in trouble. Ain't the same game now. Centers are useless, you can get by with a forward and a bunch of guards.

Should be NBA depth

yup

and i am in the minority but several feet behind that i would have a 5 point line. could only be done cross court perpendicular with baseline/goal though. not enough depth in corners for that shot parallel with baaeline/goal.

I agree with you, OP. I was a student during the Dale Brown heyday - there was no shot clock and no 3 point shot. I thought college basketball was the best sport in the world and I could watch any D1 college game on espn that was playing.

I can't even watch college basketball anymore. it's just running and jumping and 3 point shots.

NBA is imho just a shade higher than professional wrestling. crappiest "real" sport out there.

but, as many have suggested people like me do - I just don't watch. I can't even watch LSU roundball when they are good. the game just sucks too bad for me.

If anything, they should add a 4-pt. line. It makes sense the way some NBA teams play now.

Don't agree with you, but would you settle for elimination of the three point shot with a line for a four point shot, 10' further out?

the game is a hell of a lot better now than back then (ignoring the one-and-done issue).

No shot clock was awful. And the 3-point shot opens up the lane. An improvement would be moving the line out a bit further because it's too easy of a shot now.

We can also eliminate:

Small California college baseball teams
Alabama football
Oklahoma gymnastics program,
and the 635 football coaches smarter than ours.

Than it would be on!

Dude. The game still does the same shite, its just not all compacted within the paint.

The offense works the ball around the floor through team work and strategy for the best shot up close OR the best shot from 3 point land. a good shot up close or an open 3pt has become a high percentage shot. AMAZING!

Teams would just play zone and take away the high-percentage shot so you would have to resort to outside shots to get them out of the zone and get a low-post game going again.
It's all relative and if you design your offense right and the players execute the offense right, you are way more versatile and dynamic as an offense if you have an inside/outside game. It spreads the defense out where double teams are harder to pull off without leaving a man wide open and creates driving lanes which leads to open 3's or dishing the ball to big men for layups/dunks.
