I have long been an advocate of eliminating the 3 point shot. The 3 point shot has done a lot to take away the art of the game, that is, working the ball through team work and strategy to get the ball near the basket for a shot. The 3 pointer has done a lot to eliminate the original intent of the game. I think it is much more rewarding to watch a team work the ball around for a high percentage shot than having a player just throwing up bombs from the parking lot.
I'm a traditionalist so I'm sure this idea won't sit well with a most of you and I'm not naive enough to think it will ever change.

Point blank- 95% of basketball fans wouldn’t appreciate what you’re saying should be the focus of the game. It’s like saying that the UFC should be more focused on the technical ground aspect of the game instead of huge guys throwing haymakers at each other. People like to see home runs, long TD runs, knockouts, and in this case, a 3 pointer from the parking lot to tie the game. I think it sucks in a lot of cases too but that’s the world we live in and it isn’t going away

I'm not for eliminating the 3 point shot, however I do believe the 3 point line needs to be pushed back in college basketball.

I am of the opinion it would have a great impact on the number of 3 pointers attempted per game and thus force teams to find a way to work for a higher percentage shot.

I don’t know....I got a little tired watching the same two guys basically take every shot for each team in the VA/Purdue game. 3 after 3 after 3. I don’t think the 3 should be taken away at all. I just like seeing more players get involved personally. It was a fun game...but the team that played more as a team won in the end. The last 5-10 minutes Edwards was the ONLY one taking shots for Purdue and that cost them in the end imo.

Couldn’t disagree more. The three gives the defense more to cover and opens up the court for more dynamic play.

The original game involved much smaller athletes on the same size court. I can’t begin to imagine how boring it would be to watch today’s monsters packing it in with nothing forcing the D to relax.

Move the line back and ALSO only allow three point shots to count during the last ten minutes of each half. This would give us a little bit of both.

I’m more interested in adding a 4 pt shot.

I get what you're saying, but one thing the 3-point shot does it allow for different strategies. If a team is getting shut down inside they can take it outside and still have a chance. If one team has 7-1/2 foot tall giants in the front court, the other isn't just relegated to banging their heads up against that wall.

...if they can actually shoot.

Unlike a lot of people, who will probably just call you "old man", and dismiss everything you said, I appreciate where you're coming from. I'm in my early 30's, so I'm not as much of a traditionalist as you, being that I grew up with the 3 point shot.

I like the three, but it I liked it MUCH better when it was just an extension piece; something that you mixed in, only after you had moved the ball around and made a legitimate attempt to get the ball inside. When I came into watching basketball, there were all of these great big men, like Shaq, Karl Malone, Olajuwon, Ewing, Mourning, Duncan and Robinson, and so on. It was an inside out game. And Michael Jordan was the greatest player in the world, even though he didn't have a great percentage from 3, he was unstoppable everywhere else, and it seemed like he never missed a clutch shot. That was exciting basketball.

Now, it's basically a three point shooting contest. There are very few dominant big men, and very few guys like Mutombo who excite the crowd with block after block, because there is such little emphasis on interior defense, with everyone jacking up threes. The few big men who aren't shooting threes, are mostly just dunking, and don't have any real post moves to take over a game.

And the college game follows this style closely, because of the influence the NBA has on recruits who want to emulate their favorite players and "fit in".

So while I don't want to eliminate the 3, altogether, I do share your frustration for how stale the game is becoming. If we could at least go back to the way it was 12-15 years ago, that'd be nice.

This would be asinine. If you don't like the current product, then don't watch it.

I'm with you. In football, they don't give you more points if you run the ball into the end zone from more than 20 yards out or if you kick the field goal from more than 50 yards. In hockey and soccer, a goal is a goal no matter how long the shot.
