Hopefully, he just doesn't know any better. I doubt it, but I hope.

As a rookie, Donte Jackson has much to pick up about being a professional football player. And it appears the Panthers' young cornerback still has some things to learn off the field as well. Jackson was called out for tipping less than five percent on a $120-plus tab over the weekend. The waiter tweeted the receipt at Jackson on Sunday, showing a picture of where Jackson tipped only $5. The former LSU star also drew a smiley face into the "5.00" tip portion of his bill, throwing a little more salt on the wound.

Maybe the waitress provided shitty service and only deserved $5.

When you go out to eat in a restaurant, it is customary to tip at least 15-20 percent. Research from Cornell University has shown that 70% of whites know that compared to only 35% of blacks. That divide — and also the difference in tipping, I believe — can be mostly attributed to the fact that there are significantly less black servers than white servers. That means that you have many more black people than white people that don’t understand how the restaurant business works.
ION KNOW ANY BETTA

And the waiter tweeted "no such thing as bad service" which means he's probably an expert in bad service.

Absolutely. Inexcusable to call out a patron by name for a small tip which he wasn't even obligated to provide.
He's probably not used to $100+ dinners; he didn't go to Bama.

this. I tip 20-25% 95% of the time but if I get shitty service I cut it back. once, I tipped one penny and wrote on the ticket why. maybe his smiley face was his explanation.

When you make millions and cant dish out another $20, it says a lot about your character imo. But like someone else said, he probably thought he was being generous.

Maybe the service was shitty so he decided it wasn’t worth a decent tip? Too many people think that waiters/waitresses just deserve X amount. Sorry, if the service is shite the tip will be in kind.

He knew better. Hence the smiley face.

Wrong. It's sad people upvote this and just assume this as the case.
It's simply pure ignorance on Donte's part.
I don't even think it's intentional.
The waiter claims that his group was very nice to him and also Donte's people have gone on record saying the same of the service. The service was great. They even felt bad about the tip.
It had nothing to do with the service.
$5 is something I would tip a pizza delivery guy. This was a $125ish restaurant service in which he probably waited on them for about an hour?
Even if it had been poor service, which it was not.. then I believe the standard is like 10%.
I just don't think Donte understands is all.

The fact that the waiter is big enough of a douche to tweet about it is enough for me to take Donte Jackson's side on this. We do not know any details about the meal. Was it a takeout order? Did he tip cash on the side? Was there an automatic tip that was on the receipt you get before the final to sign (That does not always show on the signed copy and some servers are clever about that)? Was most it of it a bar tab where you would not necessarily tip the waiter? Was the waiter an unbelievable douche who deserved no tip? I say yes on at least the last one.

Many people, including Donte's group, have said similar.
It's clearly just Donte is ignorant on the matter.
I went to look up what Donte signed for and I was impressed.

Donte Jackson signed a four year contract with the Carolina Panthers worth $4,812,526 on May 10, 2018. Jackson received $2,758,711 million in guaranteed salary including a $1,580,020 signing bonus. Jackson was the 55th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

While I agree it's weak on him to tip like that, she's no better than she excused him. Sharing this publicly? What's the gain? If I run the store I don't like his tio but she's gone. That reflects on the restaurant as much as anything. Weak all around.
