It's early, but that kid looks built to be a lead off man.

He's going to draw a lot of walks, has good speed, and makes good good contact. Looks great in the field, too.

Being a switch hitter that makes contact from both sides is a great attribute for lead off.

The kids special. It’s not fair to compare him to former players just yet , but before it’s said and done I think he will break some records.

He’s not a starter yet but he gives this team some looks they don’t have right now

It looks like Pearson, Brown, and Milam are going to get the opportunity at 2B/RF to establish who gets PT.

Like his approach at the plate, Ben said he lets the ball come through before he swings like Tommy white

I think he told Pearson to go get his outfield glove....

I know Braswell had a good fall, but if he does not start hitting the ball, Milam could take his spot at SS with Pearson at 2nd.

I am as excited as anyone about Milam looking great….

But it’s been two games. And quite frankly, facing a VMI staff pitching its fourth game of the opening weekend is likely the worst pitching we will see all season. I only saw one VMI pitcher all weekend long that even touched 90 mph and that was for an inning and a half on Friday.

Braswell made solid contact all weekend, the ball just found a lot of gloves.

Ha! The friday game I kept watching the starter occasionally looping in some wounded ducks and checking the scoreboard to see numbers in the mid 60s. It's gotta be kind of weird to see avg pitches in the 90s most of the time then to have VMI come in and drop offspeed 30mph slower than you're used to. It'd be like the player going home and having one of their (non baseball) friends throw them batting practice.

I dont think any long-term decisions will be made off the first weekend but we have a good problem to have between Brown, Milam and Pearson right now.

Yeah I'm not worried about braswell at this point and I doubt Jay is either. It's early, and he didn't look lost or foolish in any of the ABs I can remember, just didn't have much luck. I think he'll have a decent (but not limitless) leash to start the season.

Talk about making generalizations from a 3 game sample size

If you're going to double down on this are you ready to admit you were wrong about Milam?

I listened to the postgame show yesterday on the way home from the game. Jay was about as giddy as he could be talking about Milam. He said he is the wheelhouse coach Johnson player. He was equally complimentary of Brown as well. The future is bright along with the present.

Adam’s pre-season comments on Milam

quote:

Steven Milam is an interesting prospect here. Switch hitting, quick feet, good instincts on the base paths, with a great arm. Much like 7-8 freshman and sophomores fighting for at bats he needs to show he can hit with more consistency, because he's no good hitting 0.200 at the bottom of the order

I don't see that happening anytime soon. Braswell may be batting only .200, but he hasn't struck out. He's making contact. He's got a walk, double, and a sac bunt in 12 trips the plate.

To make that happen, you'd put Milam at SS and Pearson at 2B. Pearson is batting very similar to Braswell so it isn't worth benching a veteran SS just to get a small upgrade at the plate based on 3 games of stats.

With all that said, Jay likes to tinker and this lineup isn't close to its final form. Last year's opening day lineup and game 3 of the CWS finals had 4 starters in common.
