As shitty as this season has been, feels like the greatest of Milam is being overlooked

I mean maybe… I feel like every game the broadcast praises how great Milam is defensively though

As good as he is, he doesn’t have the range Bregman did, so
it’s very close which one is the best

Is this like those non-conference stat threads where LSU is the greatest ever?

Bregman was amazing at SS. Probably had a little better range but Milam is just as smooth.

I don't recall how good Mike Miley was (10 overall pick in '74) but I suspect he was the best athlete we've ever had at SS.

Feel like Kramer’s senior season at SS is a little under appreciated

Miley was a phenomenal shortstop on a very mediocre Angel team. Better at shortstop than QB of the Tiger football team, and that's saying a lot. He was more than capable in that role.

Mike Miley: the original Miley, 40 years before anyone ever heard of Miley Cyrus/ Hannah Montana. He was tragically done waaaaay too soon.

Actually DJ was pretty bad at SS and half way through the season was moved to 2nd because Nola was a better infielder. Many thought this decision was a key for our national championship run that year.

I don’t recall DJ being bad at SS.I just remember that the middle infield wasn’t producing enough double plays. But was that DJ’s fault? It sure clicked with DJ at second base.

ETA: He certainly is not in the conversation for GOAT LSU SS,

Alex Bregman has entered the chat.

Brandon Larson and his bat have entered the chat.

Two things:

1. He followed Bregman, and anyone following that would feel like a letdown.

2. He tried too hard to be Bregman.

Bregman had an ability to fricking dance around the infield and make plays that ended up on ESPN each week … Kramer thought he could do the same (probably because the media hyped him so much because of his family) and it ended up costing him a play or two. He was good, but he didn’t quite have that kind of magic.

only problem I have is that the coach who is putting him in ridiculous positions with the shift that makes his job that much harder

It’s so hard to compare SS from the 1990’s to the 2013 dead bat era to this era. Then, IMO scorekeeping has watered down what an error is the last 10 years starting with MLB. Maybe because they perceive balls being hit harder than in the past. Score keepers unwritten rule was if the ball hit at you and you get a glove on it or if you get to it and you don’t make the play, it’s an error as a general rule. I see way more hits given today to balls that eat up the infielder.
In college, I believe on average the balls were hit harder in the mid to late 90’s than any other time. Unfortunately, we don’t have Trackman data to support that.
So trying to compare players from different eras is difficult. I really appreciate solid defense and good pitching.
