They have not earned a spot. They had multiple opportunities to do so and were not able to. In absolutely no way, shape or form should they be allowed to progress further. Participation trophies and entitlement are for the weak.

LSU should be a permanent host
The k lady demands it

You’re an idiot obviously you did not go to any of the games this past season. We were horrible.

Don’t understand everyone saying “participation trophy”.
Because it is.

This isn’t an unheard of concept, and it requires reaching the absolute pinnacle of the sport.
What other sports does this happen in?

Wouldn’t be completely against the runner-up getting in too. We’re talking about bumping no-name schools here.
What do you mean “wouldn’t be completely against”? You should be 100% for it. They have the exact same “disadvantage” as the winning team.

I can think of some individual sports where stuff like this occurs. Like in chess, the world champion continues to hold their title while everyone else has to go through the Candidates tournament for the right to challenge for the title, even if the world champion performs bad in other tournaments and other players have higher ELO ratings, he can't lose the title unless beaten in a world champion match by the candidates winner. Or unless you willingly give up your title like Magnus Carlsen did because he got tired of defending it and wanted to play more tourneys and start a family.
You also have golf where former masters winners get a lifetime invite.
I can't think of any team sports that operate this way though. It can work for individual sports because it's the same person year to year, but rosters change too much year to year for it to work for team sports.

Troy made the tournament with an at large bid on only a 32-29 record!

What part of what you said is a counter argument to what is said?

Why don't we just hand out a trophy for everybody who participated this year
Posted on 5/25/26 at 11:52 am to ForeverEllisHugh
God no, new team new season, earn it.
Posted on 5/25/26 at 11:52 am to ForeverEllisHugh
Absolutely not. No one should be given a spot in the postseason. You either earn it by your play through the season, or by winning your conference tournament.
LSU did neither and did not deserve the postseason.

I hope no social media accounts pick on this stupid post

Obviously terrible take by OP and I'm not making excuses for the terrible LSU season. It was an inexcusable debacle.
However, to pretend that making a finals run in the prior year doesn't hurt just isn't accurate and is ignoring empirical evidence.
Since 2021 (portal), both the CWS winner and runner up have had significant decline in the following year. Literally all 10 teams.
Champion win totals drop 34% and runner ups drop 33%. Average win totals go from 52 to 34. Win percentage goes from 75% to 57%. The data is almost identical for both champions and 2nd place.

You must be from the participation trophy era.
