Because he would have 4 guaranteed years left if he took the RS this year.

And if he got hurt, wanted to transfer again, fell behind on the depth chart, etc, he won't have the opportunity to use a RS down the road.

I don’t want nuss at LSU if he doesn’t want to play in the bowl game

...because he'll have already used it and not had this year count against him. Using the RS now guarantees he'll be eligible for the 2025 season. Saving it now and using it later will let him be eligible for the 2025 season, there's no difference. If he's in a position to use the redshirt (i.e. now when there's only the bowl left) I don't see what benefit there'd be to saving it for later at this point, we're already this far into the year and he still has the opportunity to extend his eligibility so it'd be best to use it now while he has the chance. No one knows what the future holds so it's best to extend eligibility now because waiting to see what happens in the future would not grant him any more time than if he used it now.

Nussmeier needs to step up and play. Period. Are you a team guy or a me guy? You could be a 3 year starter and impress your new coach.

This
It’s a great opportunity for him

It's important to Nussmeier.

A really embarrassingly large part of me wants to see us run Oklahoma’s 1975 triple option. Lol.

Isn’t this an opportunity for Nuss?

It's a huge opportunity.

If he chooses not to play, I suspect he's already planning to transfer.

Passing on an opportunity to start...with 3 weeks to prepare for one opponent would be dumb.

Exactly. You sat behind a player all year and now have the opportunity to genuinely take over the team and he’s not sure about it. Don’t let the door hit you.

I'm in this same boat. You have the redshirt so you can let the upperclassmen play, and you're sitting with eligibility. We're at a point where there is no one else. You're the guy, but we're delaying preparing the starter for the game? I really don't understand.

I agree. However, maybe he’s planning to play regardless and they’re just seeing if they can get the waiver anyway? Who knows.

If Walker Howard comes in and starts for 3 years and heads to NFL, Nussmeier would need a 5th year redshirt season to compete for starting spot in 4 years.

Brody Miller

Interim #LSU coach Brad Davis says Garrett Nussmeier is taking reps and LSU is "working through things" to possibly allow Nussmeier to play the Texas Bowl and keep his redshirt.

If the redshirt doesn't get approved, Davis implies LSU would play someone else at QB.

When Miller says Davis implies this he may actually have inferred it. That first statement does not imply that Nuss will not play it cost his redshirt, only that they want to preserve the red shirt.

ETA: Just watched the video. Davis says they have contingencies in place if the waiver request is denied. That does imply that Nuss won't play if the request is denied. But man, Davis sure comes across as a consummate professional.

That's the most likely scenario.

But, IF he chooses not to play...

a decision between him and his family and we'll just have to get over it

I like all the selfish indignation disguised as concern for his future and the team as a whole that's on display.

I don’t see why he’s so set on redshirting. If he’s any good he won’t play 4 years anywhere, whether it’s here or not
