he was a tackling machine under the LB whisperer, Aranda

the primary concern is that if he's not a scheme/philosophy fit for Bo, does that mean we have to completely rebuild our LBs?

we already lost Brooks for similar reasons

LB play has been poor outside of Jabrill Cox. Baskerville is out of position and Clark gets caught in traffic.

The DBs improved this week and now the LB corps looks weaker. It may be time to start rotating White and Sampah in and see what they can do.

i don't think he was ever claimed to be fast

he's a thumper and even though he had an insane tackle per minute rate in Aranda's scheme, he wasn't full time b/c of his speed/coverage issues

I think Clark was used by Aranda more as a pass rush specialist especially when Divinity was suspended but Clark at the middle linebacker spot this year has just not been productive at all.

I was thinking this last night when we still had starters from LB to CB. But had a bunch of freshman in on DLine.

Really would have liked to see the swap out one LB at a time to get SAMPA, WHITE, WEBB in with the other two starter LB.

UF has a really tough RB and we don't cover the RB out of the backfield well (we seems to let the sideline wide open on short routes as well). Pitts and Toney will present big problems for us because Trask is very accurate and those dudes don't go down easily once they have the ball.

Baskerville literally looks a freshman who is working at a new position. Completely clueless where to be and always out of position. Raises his arms like wtf is going on after every play.

2018/2019 LBe recruiting has been bust

feel the staff struck out on more talented players and just happen to settle on Clarke, Starks, Baskerville, and others (none were highly regarded) or the staff evaluated them and thought they were much better than their star ranking.

regardless, none of them are sec starting material

Remember we couldn’t find a position for Brooks in our new D!!! How O let that happen is beyond me.

This happens when you switch from a 3-4 to a 4-4 front.

In a 3-4, the linebackers are assigned gaps, and most of their coverages are zones they are assigned (see Queen’s pick on Tua last year).

In a 4-3, the linebackers are an extension of the DL unless they are assigned a man to cover. They have to be attacking-minded and quick to read.

That means that when they are switching from a scheme that has them watch/react to a scheme where they are first step forward almost every play, they have a learning curve where they don’t want to be too aggressive and screw up, or where they are way too aggressive and over pursue.

Baskerville and Clark are in this area. They did much better in the second half, but I think they will be fine come UF week. This next game I will be watching the LBs intently, as that is my biggest worry about this year’s squad.

Always questioned why everyone was so high on Damone. He’s got good lb size but always looked stiff to me.

I wasn’t a fan last year because of his physicality compared to other linebackers we’ve had he tackles like a cornerback

2 things (in my opinion):
1. Jordan Toles needs time at Safety cause Harris or Lewis is not the answer there.
(He may not be either, but you gotta try.)
2. Devote Lee needs a shot at a LB position.

I wonder if some of it just comes down to our LB’s still adjusting to the 4-3. I would think it’s a way different game for LB’s when your DL are penetrating gaps rather than trying to eat up double-teams.

The LB’s, and especially MLB, are going to have to make split-second reads, shed blocks, and get to the line of scrimmage. It might take a little time for them to adjust at game speed when the blocks are developing differently than they would in a 3-4.

I’m sure Pelini’s recruitment philosophy will be a bit different than Aranda’s in the long run, but I don’t see why Damone wouldn’t fit his mold. Hell, he’s listed at 6’3”-245. Not exactly a tweener.

ETA: I will say I was yelling at my TV when Stingley was making tackles on inside running plays.

IMO, LB is one of the harder assignments to play in a 4-3. It just takes time for guys to settle in and make quick reads. Literally taking an extra second can have you out of position on a play.

There is little room for wrong reads.

Once they make the mistakes via live game time, things start to get slower for the guys.

Like a DB can make the wrong read and lose a step but can often make it up on the route.

Lb's take the wrong 1st step and they are then blocked.
