I think Trask and Mullen eat the defense’s lunch. It may get ugly

What have you seen that everyone else hasn’t? High school games?

Yep. Checking in.
Concerned. Brooks was such an exciting young player, I do not understand the narrative that we couldn’t “find a spot” like what ?

Pelini’s LBs were never the tackling machines that Chavis or Aranda produces.

Landry and Steltz led the team in tackles 2005-2006

Although Highsmith with Steltz in 2007.

Did not understand all the offseason hype by the coaches and fans from a guy we saw nothing from for years and all of a sudden was supposed to be great. I mean you guys were consistently dragged into O's offseason hype train of the defense when common sense would have told you what we actually had.

Hopefully he improves though.

I noticed last night is that Gaye is just a stud not only rushing the passer but keeps containment and doesn’t get fooled by the play action stuff. Some of our linebackers got fooled last night and if Gaye doesn’t stay home then it’s a huge gain. Gaye is just a beast and the speed at that size is just amazing.
I think therein lies PART of the answer to the OP. Containment has been quite good and OLBs very active. Clark is late to the party out past the tackles because those guys are doing their job. Not to mention Jacoby is very active at LoS too.

I too was wondering same thing that OP (and others) were wondering. However, I did see him attacking gaps like he should and the middle has been stout so far.

So I'm assuming I shouldn't believe my lying eyes and let the numbers do the talking. It seems that within the front 7 they are "playing within the scheme" and for the most part doing their job. So there's no need for him to be everywhere at once. It's one way to look at it.

I think most critique would lie in the MSU game. Some of those draws were too damn pretty and it was death by crossing route. BUT... some of those draws were stuffed, none of the screens went anywhere, and we were in man not zone so you can't really fault him on the shallow coverage (unless he had pickup responsibility on K. Hill that is).

Another note...
Regarding he aforementioned containment and overall solid up front play: Clark is QB'g that. The fact that the front 7 seem to be in position, with the exception of him, says he's doing the mental aspect of the job pretty good too.

ETA: I'd much rather see a MLB coming to the pile late outside the hashes than I would see him making solo tackles out there like we used to with Beckwith and White. If you're MLB is running down RBs 12 yds downfield on the sideline... someone else didn't do their job.

His body doesn’t fit the style of offense being played anymore.

This is incredibly disingenuous. He only started three games last year and still finished #6 in tackles and #3 in sacks for the season. He’s a junior who had to play behind two different first round picks in 2018 and 2019. You could have said the same thing about Queen last year.

We needed to run a true 4-3 last night against Vandy. There were huge gaps between Cox and Clark so gashing through that was easy and when Damone was around, he poked his head in the wrong gap.

Mullen vs Pelini scares the heck out of me

Pelini scares me vs anyone. But with Mullen will be a straight bullrush to passer and often blitz but from predictable spot which will be picked up. Mullen will have miss direction and play fake and it may be ugly.

Clark shows no enthusiasm or motivation out on the field..He’s showed that the last two games.. he’s lagging, running with the play instead of attacking..he looks like he doesn’t like to initiate the point of attack and doesn’t want to tackle just jump on the pile.. he’s not what LSU needs at the MLB spot..it’s time to give some underclassman more playing time on defense @ MLB...

Very. Diagnosing, fitting and thumping in the run game by the LBs is easily our biggest weakness imo.

Just didn’t see it in week 1 because State didn’t run the ball

His performance last year and in the State game. He is a very good LB.

What I’m really concerned about is coverage on wheel routes by the RBs and TE releases
to be fair, this route is killing everyone across the league

Damone seemed to be completely lost out there. Out of position several times.

This may be a real problem going forward. Where is Baskerville? I thought Clark played well last year, but...

Hope you are correct. The defense is going to have to play MUCH better if LSU is to be relevant this year.

1 solo tackle is concerning but if you look at Pelini’s defenses historically eye not designed for the LBs to wrack you a ton of tackles.

Landry lead the team in tackles 2/3 years he was here as DC and there was a 2 way tie between Steltz and Highsmith In 2007 (with Steltz missing most of the last game)

The top 6 tacklers on his elite 2009 Nebraska Defense were 2 DL, 3 DBs and 1 LB, and Sub lead the team in tackles.

We didn’t have a ton of 100 tackle Lbs until Chavis took over. Pelini systems seem to accentuate DBs and DL
