re: Could the problem with our infielders be a lack of practice just fielding balls?

I think a lot of it is mental. Their confidence is at an all time low and seeing their teammates mess up lowers their confidence even more. None of these infielders would have gotten to this high of a level while being such poor fielders. It has to be in their head.
I really feel this is a lot of it. Something along the line of "Steve Sax Syndrome" but instead of having the yips, they are pressing too hard.

There is nothing exaggerated about how hard he [Bregman] worked and still works.
If a guy practices fielding "enough" balls in a given day or week, how much more useful is fielding even more balls?
I'm sure our coaches have our guys fielding a lot of balls.
Being an "extra hard worker" is great, it is, but all that extra work probably has very little extra benefit, if a guy is practicing enough.
Same for bad FT shooters in basketball. If you shoot 100 FTs a day in practice, does it really help more to shoot 200?

Thompson and Doughty have basically zero confidence right now in fielding even routine ground balls.
Both of them were being "defensive" and flailing around on the field instead of being relaxed and letting their training take over.

They need a sports psychologist.

Well I know a girl who knows another girl who used to go to class with a girl who knows a girl that almost dated Bregman and she said this isn't true.

They practice fielding as much as is possible during the season . That’s from someone who is really close to the program. It’s secondhand info but has been said by jay in interviews as well.

Umm the answer is yes you person who has obviously never gotten good at anything

You take a below average fielding team and then give them a little bad luck and then get in their heads a little. Then that equals last place in fielding

fielding ? the throwing errors are atrocious.

Precisely whats happened. Marginal fielders like Thompson have the yips now.
Its not just fielding, throwing is a problem too. Its mental.

I have no doubt that Bregman partied…a lot. And he probably did park at the stadium often enough for this story to make sense. But, make no mistake about it, the man also put in a lot of time on the practice field.

Ehhhhh we made it pretty deep in Omaha in 2017 with guys like Josh Smith, Kramer Robertson, Cole Freeman, Chris Reid, Jake Slaughter. Even Deichman was a middle infielder in HS.

No. In the words of Yogi Berra, baseball is 90 per cent mental. The other half is physical.

I’ve heard that Thompson puts in extra work on fielding ground balls and pretty much fields everything. I’m thinking this has more to do with the moment, being all mental.

It's probably his hair. He should shave his head.

Again, as an example, if a poor free throw shooter shot 1000 FT per day, would he get better if he shot 2000 instead of 1000? The answer is almost certainly no, because 1000 is more than enough.
Now I'm not advocating for any player to be lazy. But it's universally known that practicing 24/7 is not necessary. There's a point at which additional practice time is not helpful. Diminishing returns.
That's my point.

It is mental, you can see the anxiety in the way they move when a ball is hit at em. That liner last week Thompson jumped the wrong way on is a perfect example, it’s a bang bang play but his reaction is all stress, his feet are never settled.

Yep, with Thompson in particular. It happens.
