This. I've changed my tune on O lately. I used to despise him for how shitty he did at OM, but I realize now (especially after the Nutt years) that it wasn't due to lack of effort. He was simply not ready but it wasn't because he didn't try (unlike Nutt). I would imagine that if he could do it over again, that O would take a few different approaches and probably have some good success (see his brief time as interim HC at USC)

Mike Archer was a pretty good DC and positional coach after bombing out here at LSU. He likely deserved a second chance, just not at a school like LSU. Same goes with Coach O. Maybe he gets a head coaching gig again... but not here.

Yeah...no coach that was a head coach at place as ever been successful as a head coach some where else...

he'll be the next DC/Assisant HC under the next HC, which will be Jimbo Fisher.

How scary is it to think that if O became the Head Coach, the Press Conference responses might actually become more intelligible?

I say he's doing an extended interview and OJT right now.
I suspect he's changed alot. I think the next two years will round-off that personal growth. Then we shall see.
However, it rarely happens that way.
BUT... O has been around "the carousel" already. Maybe it happens.

A bit off topic, but this is a very insightful read about Orgeron's 3 seasons as HC of Ole Miss.

I have always believed in the so called "Peter Principle," when it comes to whether an assistant coach would make a good head coach.
This basically means you rise to your level of incompetency.
There are a few coordinators who do make good head coaches.
For example in Muschamp's case, he has been a solid DC, but not a good head coach. Another obvious example is Charley Weis.
Coach O's track record as a head coach has been a mixed bag and I would think he would likely become the DC first.

I'd be willing to give it a go.

Two things could happen
1 coach o does great and d does great so LSU does great- miles stays on to at least beat McClendon record for wins
2 offense looks bad and team looks bad . Staff is fired before part one happening

He's not head coaching material. We'd do better getting a savvy manager of a Wal-Mart than a guy like O. He seems to be a great recruiter and perhaps a good position coach, though.

IMO. If Miles does well enough to retire and not get fired, i think the succession plan is already in place for Cameron to become HC, Wilson to OC, O to asst. HC/Recruiting Coordinator.
With the recruits already lined up, especially at QB, i think the administration will keep this entire staff together if we are successful until Miles retires.

I would have some strong reservations after watching him at Ole Miss. He made a lot of mistakes
I imagine Cleveland fans were pretty sure Belicheck would never be a good HC.
I imagine Patriots fans thought Pete Carroll would never be a good HC.
Some guys get HC jobs before they are ready, and are put in bad situations.
I'm not saying O would be a great head coach, but, I don't think Ole Miss disqualifies him either.

He didn't just do bad at Ole Miss, his last season was the worse conference record in quarter century. His overall winning % was 28%
3-21 in SEC play
(Kentucky, Vandy, & Mississippi St. were his only wins, he went 3-5 against those teams)

I think he would do fine in coaching players as a position coach, but he would have to work his way up through the coordinator position before a head coach position. It takes quite an executive to run the corporation that is an SEC football team...
He would do fine with the football-related stuff, but needs a lot more polishing to deal with alumni, the press, politicians, etc

Did you ever watch his press conferences at Ole Miss? He wasn't called Coach Yaya for nothing.
Maybe he will make a good head coach someday, but I will wait and see before I am ready to say yes. He is certainly is a top recruiter, and hopefully he will prove a great coach at LSU. For now no reason to rush.

He could probably make a good DC if Steele doesn't work out but HC? uuuuh no.
