You really need to take a deep breath. There are various schemes in football that have the same roots whether in the 4-3 or 3-4 base defenses but are actually quite different on the field. Just because Steele runs a certain 4-3 scheme, does not mean its anything like the scheme run by Pelini.

A guy like Marcel Brooks can still easily be used in an OLB/SS role in the 4-3 and can be used strategically to rush the passer through a multitude of blitz packages.

some of you need to google 4-3 and 3-4 defenses before we start talking about them seriously.

Is that what you did? Google? I'm sure the people who have coached defenses on a college and pro level actually know more than a keyboard googler like you.

Say goodbye to players like Marcel Brooks and Divinity rushing the passer. They are far too small to rush the passer in a 4-3.

They’re too small to blitz?

Brooks is 190.

That’s not exactly a typical edge player in any scheme.

He was in a very specific package.

Yes, he was utilized in that "cheetah package " , in that capacity.

It’s a Jimmy and Joes issues more than an Xs and Os

Lawrence never really got going as a pass rusher. Logan never really got going. Chaisson had a slow season till the end.

And before anyone says “their job was to eat block”

When we pass rush 4 guys, they’re pretty much expected to pass rush. Really only Logan is eating blocks and pushing the middle of the pocket.

I like 3-4 too. Better against the spread

Much better, particularly with our athletes

I don’t think we have the 4-3 personnel as of today and that’s worrisome

If we ran a sorta hybrid front we could do it but you do have to wonder where guys are gonna fit.

It’s gonna be interesting. We recruited a lot of long bendy edge rushers and we were super worried about weight

Now it’s worth noting that Hunter was listed at 220 as a recruit.

Yea if Brooks is gonna be used to pressure QBs it’ll have to be in the same role as Honey Badger and Ron Brooks. If he’s lined up on the LOS teams will just run right over him for as many yards as they feel like.

Brooks is going to have a breakout year in this defense. He just has instinct to get to the QB

I think Brooks is role gets confused from last year

It’s best described as this

Just pretend he really was a safety. Now, on 3rd & long, there he is, standing up on the end of the line. He was a blitzing safety.

They did everything they could for him to avoid OT contact. He either A) ran around the end or B) ran a stunt in attempt to get to QBs untouched

He was a safety that they used to blitz

Divinity most certainly was not a “blitzing safety” in that package. Brooks obviously doesn’t have Divinity’s frame, but he was also a non-EE true freshman this year.

I don’t know what Brooks’ long-term role will be.. just pointing out that our 3rd-and-long package was intended to be a 4-man front made up of 2 DL and 2 OLBs (or more accurately, 4 of our best pass rushers). Pelini may or may not use a similar speed rush package, but I don’t know that the decision to go with a 3-4 or 4-3 base really makes a difference.

.blitz wise aranda was so so..

it is harder to defend the blitz from the 3-4. With the 4-3 you already have 4 guys with their hands in the dirt that are going to rush the QB. With the 3-4 you don't know where that 4th guy is going to come from. Easier to disguise blitzes and more variety of blitzes from the 3-4. The 3-4 is better able to defend against modern spread offenses. Hopefully this 4-3 looks like a 3-4.

that was his role last year, too

he was playing safety/hybrid CB and came off the edge. i bet there were 4 men "down" most of the time when that happened, too

With the debate and disagreement between 3-4 and 4-3, why not split the difference and run a 3.5 - 3.5?

The players fight back when you try to cut them in half.

Guess we will see. I’ve personally liked the 3-4.

I like the 3-4 too...but LSU was waaaaaaaay more nasty and aggressive running a 4-3 attack.
