Student-athletes commit to academic achievement and the pursuit of a degree, and they are required to meet yearly standards to be able to compete. College athletes' success is tracked using three measures: grades, minimum credit hours per year and progress toward earning a degree.

NCAA Overview

So GPA counts, have to be full time student, need to take courses within course curriculum (this is broad af as most of us who are college educated know).

Either what we are being told is an out right lie or this guy took some courses that aren’t even relevant to his major/minor to build his GPA for eligibility. Either way issues are systemic and preventable at this level.

When further asked to comment about LSU compliance and how the Emery situation came to, coach O said “I think they do a good job”.

That's just general coach speak.

He didn't say compliance did well in Emery's case. He's saying they do well overall.

I gotta believe behind the scenes he broke some computers, chairs and assorted office
wares.

LSU finally decided to not give credits for underwater basket weaving courses

Nah just took the wrong HRE class…classes that have a “final exam”, usually like a one slide ppt on who, in your opinion, is the most marketable athlete..

It could matter. To stay eligible you have to earn a certain %age of required hours (based on your degree program) each year. It could be the only class he passed this summer is one that is not in his degree program, therefore he is short on %age. As many on here have pointed out- if he was making the grades all along it would not be an issue.

There isn’t anything else to it. This is exactly what happened. An academic advisor registered him into classes and one of the classes was the wrong one so he didn’t get the credit for the class he was supposed to be taking because he didn’t take it. This is on LSU being incompetent. Not Emery.

And here is a good example of the "I don't know wtf I'm talking about!" type post that makes this place a laughing stock.

I wish some of you would just stfu.

I know we like jumping to conclusions, but eligibility is determined on credits earned and not specific classes. So he either took a class that he did not pass and should have never been in because of the difficulty or it’s a cover for what truly happened.

Yeah i guess it depends on his degree.

But still, LSU would just throw you on a General Studies degree until you got the grades needed.

With the gs degree you pick 3 subjects to minor in. Like sociology, communication studies and business. You can follow that course until you get the 2.0 or 2.5 needed to go into the college of business.

Thats why i still dont think it is a "wrong class" issue.

I’m fairly certain there are confidentiality rules in place that would prevent them from disclosing if he had been caught cheating, yes. This would be university policy, not specific to the athletic department. I actually think it’s covered under federal law regarding academic records.

That said, even if there weren’t confidentiality requirements, I would not expect the coaching staff to openly state that a player had been caught cheating. You shouldn’t air that kind of dirty laundry.

I love posts like this. This isn’t at all what happened, and there’s a lot more to it.

Even if he took the wrong courses or his grades weren't up to part, the summer session has been over for weeks. They had to know all of this before today.

It’s the narrative of the decade. Deflect, Deflect, Deflect. The more times said and the louder it is exclaimed, the more it will be believed.

False. You have to be working toward some degree. Classes taken that do not fall under criteria for that degree are not counted.

The academic bar is so incredibly low we shouldn’t need a staff to worry about sophomore eligibility

It’s on Emery and he deserves the door
