look man, I'm not saying the guy is worthless ok? He's obviously a talented guy and he had success limiting Oregon in 2010 which garnered some NFL visits on stopping Chip Kelly. That doesn't mean he doesn't have weaknesses that might prohibit him from getting the proverbial keys to the LSU kingdom. shite dude, Crowton was an OC in the league and looked great - for a year. VT 2007 was the best Tiger O I've ever seen .... The WIzard! But he couldn't sustain it. And that's my same concern with looking at CP's D at Cal.

Does that make any sense to you?

With the talent we potentially would be bringing in, especially if Orgeron is on staff helping getting that talent...you dont think CP could sustain it?

I don't know if his issues at Cal in year 3 were purely talent of if his scheme had finally been sorted out. I look at it in terms of Bo Pelini, had all the talent he wanted on D, but people finally figured out his scheme and began to take advantage of it.

He had the #1 defense in the Pac 10 2 years running but he wasn't able bring in the talent to sustain it?

Hey - in the end we may not get the perfect guy, CP may be the best available. If so, I'll support him 100%.

Apologies for the non-intro thread break-in.

Here's some addl info for the discussion that might shed some light on CP's Cal record.

Good post. Still like him as a candidate. Almost as much as shoop and venables.

CP is a home run hire. I remember when we first got Chavis a lot of people thought his past few years at UT was what he would bring to LSU. LSU is not Cal who competed with 3 other big time programs in state. CP will be a good fit

It's not like they were a power house. They had a few good teams and upset Carrol's USC squad. Other than that they had started sliding, they were not putting up big offensive numbers like they previously had nor were they putting players into the NFL the last few years. Not sure about the guy but Cal may not be that good of a meter to judge him by.

LOL. You really have a bug up your butt about this guy. You literally have provided no one better that we could get.

This guy would be an elite level hire.

You need to let the professional thing go.

He is wise enough to have professional experience.

It does not matter what his rankings were in the pros.

You should be happy with Pendergast, especially in his first season. He usually gets hired to turn a defense around and he is incredibly successful at it. Now imagine him with constant elite talent at his disposal. He is a very sharp and wise guy.

Venerables and Pandergast are my top choices period.

you're right, I really do. maybe it's because everyone else got sold on him so quickly. to me - his stats don't show it - frankly I think they show otherwise. I know stats aren't everything, but they tell a story, show trends, etc. and his trends and his story isn't as good as being advertised here. i think if bebe wasn't part of the equation this wouldn't be nearly as attractive of a hire.

I'm not really worried about his recruiting because we have guys on staff that do excellent with that already. Chavis had zero personality and we were able to bring all the studs in. Plus, LSU sells itself to a lot of kids. We just need a person who isn't a total idiot recruiting. My concern is why he hasn't been hired yet and if he would hold up in the SEC.

You could also nitpick any potential resume, outside of Smart who isn't realistic,

I can nitpick Smart based on his last two bowl games and the last iron bowl alone. In fact many Bama fans are doing just that.

I understand your concerns and actually share them. However, a CP/EO hire is a shot across the Saban/Kiffin bow. It would play well media wise and would inject some excitement into recruiting. Short of an absolute slam dunk the "perception" piece of this is critical.

Two schools, one school who hasn't been good for years back to back #1 defenses with crap players. The other school was on freaking sanctions and he took it to #1 in the PAC 13th in the country (ahead of LSU in a league with a HUGE variety of offensive schemes). The very next year with 8 of those starters back, the new guy runs it into the ground at 80th in the county.

Talent? WTF We aren't fricking Cal and Chavis didn't recruit worth a shite. Raymond, Haley, and Wilson brings in the talent.

I want you to tell me something? Why in all of Chavis' years, have we only had one 5 star or very highly rated LB recruit? I mean this guy is supposed to be the LB guru, (and our LB crew has been mediocre most of the time which is why we get more pressure when the secondary blitzes) yet his as can't convince top level guys to play in his system? Come on man!
