Clancy Pendergast - Defensive Records - updated with his Professional Rankings
Posted by mytigger on 1/1/15 at 5:51 pm1911
Updated with Professional Stat's:
The first number is his defensive ranking and the second is the team offensive ranking (for reference). These stats tend to back up what he did in college. Decent first year followed by a steep downward trend. Note the immediate improvement in the defenses the year after he leaves left the Cardinals and the Cheifs.
Arizona:
2003 under Larry Marmie - 32nd / Offense -32nd (Clancy hired)
2004 - 12th / O - 26th
2005 - 26th / O - 17th
2006 - 29th / O - 19th
2007 - 27th / O - 7th
2008 - 28th / O - 3rd (Clancy fired)
2009 - 14th / O -11th under DC Bill Davis
KC:
2009 - 29th / O - 23rd (Clancy fired)
2010 - 11th / O - 14th under DC Romeo Crennel

There's a lot of debate about CP and he seems to be the fans choice as a result of his ability to coach defense and "turn programs around". Well, I'm interested so did a little digging. Here's what I've found.
2010 - Cal Bears
5-7 Record
1st Yr. DC
Held Opponents Under 17 Points - 8 times (UC Davis, Colorado, Arizona, UCLA, ASU, WSU, Oregon (#1), Washington
Opponents Scored over 30-47 Points - 1 time (Oregon State)
Opponents Scored over 48 Points - 3 times (Nevada, USC, Stanford)
Recap - Decent year, not great, but an improvement from 2009. Would have been great except for allowing 3 teams to score over 40 points, once over 50. He did hold #1 Oregon to 16 points in a tough home loss though.
************
For comparison Purposes 2009 Cal Bears team was 8-5 and under the direction of DC Bob Gregory in his 8th year. Here are their stats:
Held Opponents Under 17 Point - 4 times (Maryland, E. Michigan, WSU, Arizona)
Opponents Score Over 30 Points - 3 times (USC, OSU, Utah)
Opponents Score Over 40 Points - 2 times (Oregon, UW)
**************
2011- Cal Bears
7-6 Record
2nd YR DC
Held Opponents Under 17 Points - 4 times (Presbyterian, Utah, WSU, OSU)
Opponents Scored over 30 Points - 7 times (Colorado, UW, Oregon, USC, UCLA, Stanford, ASU)
Opponents Score over 40 Points - 0 times
Recap - Meh. Didn't get blown out as much as 2010, but went from keeping 8 teams under 17 points down to 4 teams. And went from allowing 4 teams to score over 30 points to 7 teams to score over 30. Did stop teams from exceeding the 40 point mark
2012 Cal Bears
3-9 Record
3rd YR DC
Held Opponents Under 17 Points - 2 times (UCLA, WSU)
Opponents Score Over 30 - 3 times (Nevada, S. Utah, Ohio St)
Opponents Score Over 40 - 1 time (Utah)
Opponents Score Over 50 - 1 time (OU)
Opponents Score Over 60 - 1 time (OSU)
Recap - Again, opponents held under 17 points drops in half from 4 to 2. The blowouts begin again with opponents scoring 30, 40, 50, 60 + in 6 games.
2013 USC Trojans
10-4
1st YR DC
Held Opponents Under 17 Points - 8 times (Hawaii, WSU, BC, Utah St, ND, Utah, Ore. St., Stanford)
Opponents Score Over 30 Points - 2 times (Arizona, UCLA)
Opponents Score Over 60 Points - 1 time (ASU)
Recap - Very similar to year #1 at Cal. Held opponents under 17 points 8 times and over 30 3 times (versus 4 at Cal year #1).
*************
For comparison purposes here are USC's 2012 Statistics, the year prior to Clancy's arrival:
2011 USC Trojans
7-6 Record
Ed Orgeron/Monte Kiffin (3rd Year DC)
Held Opponents Under 17 Points - 5 times (Hawaii, Cal, UW, Colorado, ASU)
Opponents Score Over 30 Points - 2 (Arizona, UCLA)
Opponents Score Over 60 Points - 1 (Oregon)
*********************
CP's first year is usually his best year where he is able to keep opponents under 17 points most effectively. In his following years the effectiveness of his defensive schemes seem to decrease (a la Bo Pelini). Overall I would rate him as a short term fix and a risky hire at best. His lack of experience in recruiting in the SEC does not help his cause. His ability to recruit in the PAC 12 (see declining defensive statistics in his 3 years at Cal) may being giving LSU cause for concern in his ability to recruit in the SEC.
As a footnote, both of the stops in his collegiate resume' have resulted in the end of the tenure for the Head Coaches at Cal & USC (Jeff Tedford & Lane Kiffin).
I see Clancy Pendergast's high point as being similar to what we currently have circa 2014 and his low-point as something similar to a Mallory-Peveto disaster. At best he is a good short term fix and at worst he is an extremely unproven and unnecessarily risky hire.
Feel free to bash away.

Does any of that take into consideration how bad Cal's offense was? They were awful.

Offensive struggles shouldn't be a factor according to some who hate Chief

It's hard to make that conclusion really since he was at Cal and considering the talent he had vs the offensive talent he had to face
How many NFL players were drafter off his teams at Cal?
USC?
All I know is, he coached in the NFL for 12 years
So apparently the worlds best think he is pretty good at what he does.
Who is your guy mytigger?

Absolutely not. You could get into all kinds of quasi-analysis bullshite, but I just wanted to take a hard look at the meat-and-potatoes, the results - not the excuses. Besides, it's not like he'd be walking into an offensive juggernaut here either.

The PAC plays a very different style of football than the SEC does and IMO is not an apples to apples comparison. He has a lot of experience as a DC both in college and the NFL and is regarded as a very good recruiter.

Good let's hire him then.

Only because kiffin got canned at USC and Sarkisian brought his guy in with him. USC fans and some others associated with them want him back

Sounds like the perfect choice to me.
