Track surface (usually synthetic rubber) has more grip and slight “spring,” letting you push off harder without slipping. • Grass is softer and can be uneven, so you lose some force into the ground and risk slipping, which slows you down.
What about full pads? Think that weighs you down a little more? Hill was clocked in full pads in a game. That 23 was under those conditions and not just a helmet and shorts.

Did they have the ability to do GPS speed tracking of individual athletes back during Holiday’s time?

Translates more to kick returns than punt returns for sure. Shifty guys who can accelerate are who you want on punts. Kick returns you want a track star to hit one seam.

I never believe these practice reports.
Not saying Hilton isn’t super fast. Coaches are just full of shite.

Now we just need to make sure he stops trying to literally fly every catch attempt.

Simply asking AI and this is what it said:
Analyzing a 23.7 mph speed for a college wide receiver
A speed of 23.7 mph for a wide receiver in college football is exceptionally fast. Here's why:
Elite level speed: This speed is comparable to, and in some cases faster than, the top speeds recorded for college wide receivers and even some NFL players. For example, a wide receiver was clocked at 22.6 mph on a kickoff return touchdown, surpassing the recorded speeds of all NFL players during the 2023 season. Derius Davis achieved the fastest run recorded in both college and NFL football last season at 23.47 mph. Another wide receiver hit 22.3 mph on a touchdown play and this was the fastest speed recorded in college football that season and even faster than any NFL player in 2024, breaking Brian Thomas Jr.'s mark of 22.15 mph.
Indicates potential: Such high speed suggests a player possesses elite athleticism and a potentially significant advantage against defenders.
Not a guarantee: While blazing speed is a tremendous asset, it's essential to remember that it's only one factor in a successful wide receiver's skillset. A great receiver also needs good hands, precise route-running skills, the ability to create separation from defenders, and a willingness to block.
In essence, a 23.7 mph speed would turn heads at any college program, but it's just one piece of the puzzle for a truly impactful wide receiver.

Did AI tell you that it wasn’t in pads when he was clocked like when Hill ran his 23.42. My point is AI is full of shite without the right information included.
Fournette, on his 38th carry, ran 90 yard for a TD, in the rain and hit 22.05. That’s a 6’2” 240 lbs running back. Now calculate the force of Fournette against every single receiver to ever play hitting you at that speed versus their fastest time, which won’t be no more than 1.4 MPH faster and tell me who you want to get hit by or tackle or harder tackle in the open field. While speed may “kill. Force is a “killer”.
And he said afterwards, "I ran faster than that in college," Fournette said of his days at LSU. "It's all about getting my legs back under me. ... I ran, like, 23 mph in college, so [I'm] just trying to get my old speed back."

He shredded Baylor after he stopped jumping early. He was having timing issues when returning from injury.
He caught a couple of deep balls vs OU, as well.

AA? Possibly Durham? I bet we'll see Berry returning kicks somewhere down the line but not this year.

Thats on a track without pads on. I think Hilton is the guy I'm most excited to see this upcoming season. I think he could have a huge break out year.

Bolt ran 27+ as did Lyles.
Hilton did that in just a helmet and not a full uniform.
Hills time was during an actual freaking game. Run in a game several times and then break one and run that fast. This isn’t a knock on Hilton because he is very fast and can flat out jump but everything matters. Perspective is a hell of a thing to grasp sometimes.

His bowl game performance has me jacked. Anderson is on his way to becoming a version of Jarvis Landry if Hilton is a legit deep threat

Watching the OU and then bowl games, with the deep routes. He didn't make any moves or fakes, he just runs past coverage. They couldn't keep up with him.
Reminded me of Devery Henderson.

AA would be the punt returner on 90% of the teams in the country.
ETA:
And Harlem Berry would be a beast at it as well I bet.

Richard Thompson was way faster. Not even close.

What was his hundred or two hundred meter time in high school. what place did he come in in the state championship meet in high school?
I see He was state champion of both, the 400 (47.50) and the high jump at the state track meet in 5A his senior year. Chat gpt says he jumped just over 7' indoors was his best mark.
Also says he ran a 10.85 100m and a 21.33 in the 200m in high school

Do we see him return punts?
He has been notoriously bad at tracking the deep ball.
Fielding punts would be the last thing you want him doing.
