Penning’s issue is not quickness nor athleticism, it’s his ability to connect thought to action and technique. His 3-cone, shuttle, and 40 times are better than EVERY O-lineman on the roster (the closest is McCoy).

Pennington sets too far inside in pass blocking sets on the edge which causes him to reach or bend forward. This also causes him to over compensate and play too upright when he’s having issues after reaching. Losing Zach Strief after his rookie season was a huge factor in his development. The regression in technical proficiency was night and day.

Penning was serviceable at RT last year, his issue in pass protection is that he sets too deep on the edge and allows pass rushers to gain momentum. He would not have to worry about that at guard, with his natural pay strength, Penning may better a natural playing inside.
