I remember Hawthorne complaints. Way back there way back there. Caught by the shortstop.
Some of the Hawthorne calls used to make be just laugh, "Tiger have it 1st and 10. The give is to Addai up the middle and he gashed the Ole Miss defense for 9 yards. Tigers now have it 2nd and 6."

There are 300 pitches in a game & 54 outs. I’m glad he gets a few right

How about you provide an example of one he got wrong? Since “he can’t follow the action.”

He’s not unprofessional, he’s just not good at baseball. He cannot follow the action. The very basic thing
For instance, yesterday driving home from work.
Our hitter is batting and I’ll paraphrase.
It’s a ground ball. It bounces off the SC dugout.
You don’t make that kind of call. Just say ghd batter fouls it off. Don’t start as if the ball might be in play.

A very basic explanation on what he does poorly;
You can hear the crack of the bat & the crowd react, but what he explains is A) either delayed or B) does not jive with the other audible clues going on in the back round.
Like you can very clearly tell something different is going on just by the background noise. Watching video highlights at a later time confirms this.

I agree that his description of the play does not match the timing of the play.
But what I asked for was an example of where what he described is not what happened on the field. And you seemingly cannot provide one.

I grew up on radio baseball
You might be a casual listener
Nothing wrong w that
Blair is better at other sports

I agree 100% although he did seem to tail off towards the end. But yes initially he was excellent.

People complaining about accuracy with Blair must never have heard Hawthorne do football.
“There goes Hester up the middle for about 6 or 7 yards… good run there.”
A few seconds later.
“Alright now it’s 2nd and 9 at the Tigers 26…”

Football was the same.
“Hill with a short run up the middle. Now 2nd and 3.”

Hawthorne was terrible, dudes just ODing on nostalgia in this thread

He may be better at other sports.
And he may be an average to mediocre baseball announcer.
But some people are just making stuff up in this thread. I really think Jim Hawthorne broke some people and made them think that miscalling plays and injecting his negativity into the call was a good thing.

You just agreed with what I said. I don’t write down examples & I do everything possible to not listen to him.
According to moscona, it was Allevas idea to have him do all sports, despite not having much experience in baseball. His best sport is basketball so I know he can follow the action & articulate. He just likely doesn’t have the experience reps to explain baseball game flow well

Bill has never done play-by-play. Ans Hawthorne always had a "middle innings" guy. It was Wright before Hanny, and that goes back to the 90's

When Hawthorne was calling LSU games, people bitched about him CONSTANTLY. Far more than people do about Blair now.
It’s telling that every defense of Hawthorne is basically in essence yeah he fricked up constantly but he was a committed homer
And everyone also forgets how insufferably negative he was during the final years

He’s better than Lyn Rollins.

On that play Doug said, and this is a quote, "I would have bet my house that that was a home run"
So if there's an issue with them judging balls, it might be the angle they're set at in Hoover. Remember there's a ton of media from different teams there so they're probably cramming them wherever they can fit them
It was the 9th with 2 on and LSU down 1. This wasn’t a misread on one swing in the middle of the game.
It is basically THE cardinal sin when doing radio. To make the listener think the ball was gone and it’s not.
If you can’t see then the call should reflect that.
I think he knew it was bad and the next two calls reflected it. And I think Doug threw him a bone by saying he would have bet his house.

Yep no excitement in his voice. With Hawthorn you could visualize the game when listening on radio
