I remember Hawthorne complaints. Way back there way back there. Caught by the shortstop.

He’s not great for baseball, but I do kind of have a soft spot for him in football and basketball.

I'm so glad most of the baseball games are now available by video, because Blair is horrible. He frequently skips pitches. Like the count is 1-0, he talks, pitcher throws a pitch and the count is now 2-1. He does this frequently! Drives me insane if I'm in my car and forced to listen to him.
A radio announcers job is to be the eyes for the listener. Hawthorne had his faults. As some have mentioned, sometimes he would anticipate the play and get it wrong. We've all heard "Hawthorne homers" over the years, but he was very good on the facts: the count on the batter, outs, innings and score.

Some serious Hawthorne lovers in here. Blair is light years better than Hawthorne. Thank God we don't have to hear him biotch like a little girl anymore.

Jim is the radio voice of LSU. He was a spaz, but he was electric.

And will always be. Warren Morris Homerun, Brad Cresse game winning hit, the Matt Clark bombs at the old Box….its just an enthusiasm and love for LSU that is not there anymore.

Just getting in the car with my dad after a football game as a kid and and hearing him after the 07 Florida game or the Auburn game that season. Just memories that are stained in my mind.

Everyone wanted the "polished professional" instead of the LSU lifer. I've said since Day 1 that job should have gone to Hanny or Wright...2 dudes who bleed purple and gold.

That was "late years" Hawthorne, and wasn't him at his best.
Early to mid-years Hawthorne was gold and is the voice of many happy memories.

I've thought Blair was okay, but I'd never listened to more than a few minutes as I drove home to turn on the TV.
This week, I was on the road and listened to two games on the radio. It was frustrating as hell. Often had no idea how many outs or who was on base. Once there was a "bink" of the bat and he said it was hit deep to center, but he didn't say whether or not it was caught. We were wondering WTF was happening. No idea until the next batter was up and he mentioned that the last guy was on base.
I was tempted to stream the ESPN TV broadcast in the car, but I was already chewing through enough data.

Blair never gives you the basic information you need to listen to a football game on radio. Simple stuff like time, down, and distance.

Baseball sucks.
The only thing worse than baseball, is listening to baseball on the radio.
Get a life.
Baseball SUCKS!!

Hawthorne had a great radio voice. You could picture the lights on in tiger stadium or bertman slow walking to the mound. Blair (and others, some of the other SEC games broadcasted on TV for example are absolute bores) sounds like he is commenting on like a midweek film scout report.

I will be the contrarian here. I have the television muted and am listening to the radio. I like listening to Blair.
I can remember when I was the only one here who liked Jim Hawthorn.
I’m with you. Blair is a pro. I listen to most LSU baseball games on the radio. Blair is organized and accurate. He’s much better than most of the radio guys for other schools.
And Hawthorn was great until he started to slip.

Guess I’ll farm some downvotes too. I catch a lot of games on the radio and I like Blair. As far as the Hawthorne love I get it but geez man these guys don’t live forever eventually there’s got to be a new voice. Isn’t it at least possible that everyone thought Hawthorne sucked too when he took over?

He absolutely sucks at baseball and not much better at football or basketball. He lacks that LSU passion and just misses the moment far to often like on the Bear's grand slam or when Burrow avoids the rush in the SEC championship against GA and competes a pass downfield to Justin Jefferson. I was listening to the game yesterday on Sirus XM and that guy was so much better than Chris.

I may be in the minority but I loved Hanny calling bb games

Some of y'all just want to bitch.
I re-listened to the bottom of the first inning from the Kentucky game.
Kentucky sent 4 batters to the plate.
There were 14 pitches. The count was stated 13 times. The number of outs was stated 4 times. The position of the runner was stated 3 times (only one base runner). The score was stated 4 times. This was all in the span of 7 minutes from the time the broadcast came back from commercial to when they went back to commercial at the end of the inning.
I find it incredibly easy to follow the action when Blair is calling a baseball game. I have to think some of you have the game on and aren't paying attention at all...and then whine because he didn't say all of the information needed to catch you up in that exact moment you decided to start listening again. Increase your attention span and you'll be surprised at what you can hear.

Hawthorne's problem was calling the game exactly as it happened. It led to mistakes for sure "caught! No he dropped it." But it also created some truly authentic reactions and excitement.
Perfectly said!
