Yeah I caught some of it driving to lunch yesterday. He talked about a bloop fly ball and didn’t say whether or not it was caught for an out for about 30 seconds. I found myself yelling “well was it a fricking hit or not?!” It was a single.

You captured my frustration with his calls from day 1. I said something about not liking his calls for this reason several years ago and go crushed for it

Just not his best sport to call

In the 9th, it was unfortunately bad.

He called Larson's ball off the bat like it was a no doubter...caught just short of the warning track.

Then he called Milazzo's as if it was nothing...needed a foot for a HR.

Then he called White's as if it was a normal fly...stole that HR.

He just can't judge the hits well enough to offer real time enthusiasm. And, he's sensitive to that so I think his default is to downplay every swing and that comes across as not caring.

The Jones grand slam was the worst call I ever heard.

This I don't understand either.

Here are the exact words of his call:

"O'Brien comes set with the bases loaded. 2-2 pitch. Swung on, high in the air. Going towards the wall in left field is Wallschmidt, and JARED JONES WITH A GRAND SLAM TOWERING SHOT TO LEFT has delivered the hit the Tigers needed! The grand slam will make it six nothing LSU. No mustache, no problem for Jared Jones! His first hit here in Hoover and it's a big one!"

You have to understand the context in two specific areas:
1 - this field is massive and balls don't carry out of here the same way they do in Alex Box. So off the bat the ball looked like a fly ball to deep left.
2 - they've referenced an odd vantage point several times, and we don't really know what they can see in terms of height and angles. So they have to watch the fielders and try to describe what is happening.

I will grant that the commentary was fairly monotone with the bases loaded and no outs going up to that hit. But the call of the hit was energetic and excited and appropriate for the moment. And it was just as energetic and excited for Travinski's home run a few batters later.

I miss Jim Hawthorne - mistakes and all. I gave Blair a try but I never listen to any of his LSU broadcasts in any sport.

Some of his mistakes were funny. One time he said "Call strike three and he goes down swinging!"

Baseball sucks. The only thing worse than baseball, is listening to baseball on the radio. Get a life. Baseball SUCKS!!

Why do you dorks post your opinions like they're facts? Does your brain have the capacity to comprehend that some love baseball and hate basketball? Seriously are you too stupid to understand this?

I think Blair is a good professional announcer but does lack some flair and personality. He also is behind the pitch quite often, but I attribute partially to how many advertisements he is forced to do during the broadcast. The other issue is that his color man often doesn’t know when to shut up. As professional as Blair is, Doug is equally unprofessional and often talks over Blair or rambles on about nonsense stuff while the play is happening. So, I’ll give Blair a little bit of a break on some of those things.

My dad used to take his transistor radio onto Tiger Stadium and listen to John Ferguson do play by play while watching live. He said it was like two different games.

Blair is a pro. I listen to most LSU baseball games on the radio. Blair is organized and accurate.

He’s not unprofessional, he’s just not good at baseball. He cannot follow the action. The very basic thing

What are you even talking about?

I've posted multiple examples in this thread.

Some people just want to complain.

Hawthorne is in bad shape. Jim is 81 years old and can barely talk.

I didn't know this. I always enjoyed listening to him. When I was in HS entering college and unsure of what I wanted to do next, I did some radio work in NE Mississippi for EMCC basketball while working as a beat writer for the sports dept at the Commercial Dispatch (Columbus, MS). I reached out to him and he was so responsive and kind. Met a couple times when LSU played at State for sports. Always a gentleman. Prayers for a longer and pain-free outcome for him!

On that play Doug said, and this is a quote, "I would have bet my house that that was a home run"

So if there's an issue with them judging balls, it might be the angle they're set at in Hoover. Remember there's a ton of media from different teams there so they're probably cramming them wherever they can fit them

Well, I am not sure that I've proven anything, but I have provided some evidence to the contrary of your statements.

This is a very real thing. There have been several plays they've commented on the weird vantage point they have.
