assuming people are saying the bunt worked for UCLA tonight, it actually didn't.

Bunt for a single turned into an error gets to second moved to third by ground out sac fly

then guy got to second (yes with bunt) and error brought him in.

the typical bunt him to second get a base hit never worked for UCLA tonight.

You do realize that means the bunt worked, right?

getting cute? If you score 2 runs in the inning you win.. why take away all possibility of that?

WTF? Dude, you have to tie the game before you even think of scoring another. That's how baseball is played.

You don't play for the big inning when you are down 1 in the bottom of the 9th. Good Lord. LMAO

But to hell with a bunt, and flushing one of your precious outs down the crapper.

Didn't they get to 2nd base against us on a bunt?

A 2-1 pitch will be almost just as good to hit as the 2-0 pitch in that kind of situation in the 9th.

It hurts even more that he struggled to throw strikes all inning.

No kidding. You tie the game, period. That's all you are playing for at that point.

I'll tie. Then I worry about winning.

Not with power guys. You let them swing away (See MLB), but with contact hitters, like Rhymes, you either bunt or put on H&R. You never let him swing away without putting the runner in motion. Just a bad decision by the coaches. Hopefully they will learn from it this time.

yes by bunting for a hit we threw the ball away because they put pressure on our defense. I guess Mainieri thought putting pressure on there defense was not a good idea.

I'm not saying he is, but he is still .400+ OBP guy with a 2-0 count. I was just pointing out how out of whack double oh's bunting habits seem to be.

I honestly think it was a close call either way. If you prefer bunting, fine. If you prefer swinging away, fine. If you think someone is an idiot for feeling the other way, then you are probably the idiot.

your putting pressure on the defense when you bunt for a hit or bunt to move a runner over. How many times have you seen a defense screw up up a bunt where they throw wild to 1st or try and get the lead runner at 2nd and throw it into center field. Ive seen its hundreds of times.

How many times have you seen a fielder screw up a ground ball in the infield? UCLA took the lead on just such a play.

Right. The game is tied with a sac instead of a DP...

This isn't even close. You take with the count at 2-0. If he throws a strike, then you bunt the next pitch. Under no circumstances do you swing away until you get to two strikes. It's the bottom of the ninth. You have to take away the double play and put pressure on the pitcher and the defense.
