If it was a 6th or 7th inning call, I could understand. But they absolutely had to get someone in scoring position. Oh well. Hopefully they can claw their way back!

Loving the hindsight is 20-20 crowd. Rhymes had shown bunt...drawing the 3rd baseman in. A great hitter had a 2-0 count against what is typically a great control pitcher. Rhymes very much figured to get the best pitch of the at bat in that situation....and he did...and he swung...and he hit it pretty hard....but it went right to the drawn in 3rd baseman. If that ball is 2 feet to the right, its a hit and everyone is a hero.

Check in here if you're ok with swinging there 2-0assuming people are saying the bunt worked for UCLA tonight, it actually didn't. Bunt for a single turned into an error gets to second moved to third by ground out sac fly then guy got to second (yes with bunt) and error brought him in. the typical bunt him to second get a base hit never worked for UCLA tonight.

your putting pressure on the defense when you bunt for a hit or bunt to move a runner over. How many times have you seen a defense screw up up a bunt where they throw wild to 1st or try and get the lead runner at 2nd and throw it into center field. Ive seen its hundreds of times.

Considering it was a low slot sinkerball guy on the mound, and a guy at the plate who hits a lot of ground balls, I probably would have kept the bunt on, though I don't fault the decision to let him hit. He probably should have showed bunt and taken a pitch, then start the runner 2-1 or 3-1, but I don't fault managers and coaches who don't like to give away outs, especially behind, late in the game with a middle order guy at the dish.

Its the freakin 9th inning you bunt the ball. This is not a mid week game against Tulane where you let them all swing away. Its Game 1 of the College World Series its the 9th inning with a runner on 1st and no outs. You bunt the damn ball...

Rhymes should bunt in that situation every time, but as I said it's not always the right call. If you have a guy who can win it with one swing you NEVER but that player. If they hit into a DP it's just bad luck. Rhymes was NOT going to win it with one swing so the decision to let him swing blows me away though.

I said in the World series late in the game if you need to move a runner over I would bunt Cabrera or who ever it is I don't give a fawk how many HR's the guy has or if hes hitting .600. The correct call is to bunt and move the runner over into scoring position.

Oh wow

Yep. Can't try to get too cute when the games on the line. Just get a run in, tie the game and go from there.

Eliminate the DP possibility, don't hit into one

It's dumb. There is no rationalization. They win the game by squaring up and bunting before nola is out of his stretch. We lose the game by eras and putting our biggest statistical DP guy into harms way with a 2 count lead.

frickin way. When you're in a tight game against a team that executes fundamentals flawlessly, you SHOULD BE PLAYING FUNDAMENTAL BASEBALL! Bunting Rhymes was the correct call. YOU DON'T LET A DOUBLE PLAY MACHINE SWING AWAY IN THAT SITUATION! Maneri was soundly out-coached tonight! Another example... hitter swinging at first pitches from the 7th inning on. FUNDAMENTALS call for taking until you get a strike, especially being behind. Really pissed off at Manieri tonight. Hope we can find a way to get back in it on Tuesday.

Exactly correct when you are down to the last 2 innings and you are behind you take till you get a strike. Its called Baseball 101. 10 yr olds learn that.

But that's not what happened...

Fans are always smart in hindsight, but that call should have been an easy decision. We decided to take a risk.

And he really was talking about the 4th inning.

Because we were talking about Bergman's situation (in the fourth inning)

In the situation last nite if Cabrera is up to bat in the World Series against a pitcher that is dealing and one run will win the game im bunting his azz. You can swing away that's you but don't tell me a #3 hitter doesn't bunt that's freakin laughable. Yall all manage like an American League manager.

these are mutually exclusive statements. Throwing away an out is exactly what's happening. If you only want to score 1 run in an inning than I can understand, but I want more than that in an inning

100% truth. Took a risk instead of playing it safe.

I only wanted 1. If you don't get that 1, the game is over.

You get one run when you are down 1. If you get more, than fine. But you make sure you have the best chance at getting 1 run first.

We watched them doing it all night. All night almost every inning. It's not les miles making a call on 4th down.

ask any college coach what they would do in that situation and I bet 95% would say to bunt and get the runner in scoring position

the way I look at it is this..
Is there a better chance of getting two hits from three batters or one hit from 2 batters (possibly 3 if they walk someone with first base open)
I bunt every time, no matter who is up

You don't necessarily need another hit. You need one reasonably deep hit to advance the runner to third (especially if you've put him in motion). With 0 outs, you have two shots at a deep fly ball to score the run, or preferably another hit.

Or, you get a shallow hit and have runners on 1st and 2nd. At that point you can sac bunt (throw in someone you can count on to put it down the line, maybe, if you're willing to pinch run Ibarra anyway) and put two runners into scoring position with 1 out, and you can score on a sac fly.
