Let’s just focus on Perkins trying to kill Bryce Young.

No targeting call and no review...

Daniels does a bad job of sliding. I didn’t think that hit was that egregious.

Well. If you miss it isn't targeting b the rules, right?
If I try to hold a guy but miss, it isn't holding.

Wrong and wrong.
The intent was there, but he completely missed Daniels.

Curious if they could have still called unsportsmanlike conduct.
I'd say launching at a player well after he's given himself up is unsportsmanlike.
It's not unnecessary roughness or targeting because the refs said he missed (still bull).

Correct. I think we're arguing the same thing here.

I don't think it was targeting. But it sure looked like a personal foul for a late hit on a defenseless player.

He saw Daniels sliding, then decided to launch himself headfirst. Missed with that and the forearm shiver.
He got lucky because of the refs seeking out a way to absolve the kid.

Did he? They never zoomed in close enough to see, but it looked like he shoulder/upper arm got JD in the facemask.

I was under the impression this was a big part of the targeting rule...then they dropped that explanation

ESPECIALLY considering he didn't launch until JD started his slide.

I don't think there is an "attempted targeting" penalty.

There isn't but they factor intent into the decision and penalty.

So here is the crux of my issue with “targeting.” The word “targeting” implies intent.
Targeting frequently gets called where intent is questionable. Here, I don’t think intent can be questioned, but the guy got bailed out because he missed.

I get what you’re saying, but targeting was implemented with the express purpose of player safety/ reducing dangerous play.
Holding is a sportsmanship/fairness penalty.

What a bunch of Karens. He didn't even hit Daniels.
Grow a pair.

He missed Daniels thus the flag was picked up - correct call

Yeah college football needs to clean the targeting rule up and the overall spirit of it.
There are a lot of incidental, just trying to make a clean football play, where the offensive player actually leads to getting his own helmet/head hit and those defenders get thrown out of the game for making an accidental bang bang play.
Then you have a play like we had against Bama where a guy was obviously going in with sinister intentions, but since he is a shitty tackler and he happened to miss, that drew no penalty, even though his intent was to be a dirty thug piece of shite and take our QB out.
