At this point BR needs to treat LSU like LSU treats athletics as a way to attract people. The governor needs to use LSU as a way to positively influence the growth of BR.

For more than 10 years LSU has not attracted top young academic talent. The salaries, benefits, education for kids, and local quality of life are subpar. What LSU hires are good but not great profs coming out of good but not great universities. You find the same problem with mid-level admin such as the deans. Most did an acceptable job at 2nd-rate schools. They simply do not know how to build top-rate programs.

If Tate can flush out all the mediocre admin and replaces them with people who know quality, things will be better.

This is a issue with the state, probably more than it is with LSU itself. The state just doesn’t give a shite about education.

And as always, when CRT comes up, I ask the author of the comment to explain to everyone what CRT is. And how it impacts learning, since it's viewed as this harsh brainwash grab.

For me it’s saying that if you are white, any individual advantage you have is because of systemic racism and because you benefit from it, you are guilty of racism by association.

I believe there are some places in this country where that is taught. Not saying this is one of them.

I think this is a very important topic/question. Definitely would like to see academics side of things improve. After all it’s what a university is all about, or should be lol!

Alabama has done this in a big way. I'm an LSU alum...buddy is an LSU alum. His was high school senior last year. Mine will be a high school senior this year. We were just discussing visiting colleges and his son chose Bama. Said the campus was nice, clean, updated, etc.... all the things. Said when they went to LSU visit it really was a shite-hole once you started comparing it to other schools out there. Its a shame.

He said they have funneled all the football success money back into their university at Bama.

LSU is only hanging on because of TOPS and all the kids that can go there on the cheap.

You DOOOOOOOOO realize that the LSU Cox Academic Center for Student-Athletes is one of the finest of its kind in the nation, right ???????????

Not talking about Academic Centers for student athletes. Talking about the academic standing for the whole university.

Looking for a serious debate here so if you are here to troll don’t bother...

Really hoping that LSU and State leaders don’t squander this golden opportunity to reinvest on the academic side of the university as well and help it rise up the ranks so we can keep more of our bright students in state.
This is exactly the thread that I wanted to start. I've made comments to this in the past. Duke leveraged their basketball success to do the same thing. They are now considered elite academically.

I guarantee applications to LSU are up, and if they wanted to, they could raise their average SAT scores tremendously. But it would take a commitment to bringing in those academic out-of-state students and a commitment to building their academic programs. That would mean either significantly expanding their enrollment or taking significantly fewer LA kids. Regardless, it would make it harder for LA kids to attend, and the whole TOPS program would need to be looked at.

Tough choices, but a huge opportunity for LSU. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I see the desire for them to take advantage of the situation.

No, I didn't. I gave you references to CRT authors. If you would like to further discuss CRT, start a thread on the poli board.

BR crime isn't LSU crime

Yes, it is. It is not exclusive to LSU, but don't pretend that culture isn't present.

They can light up TS in Floyd's school colors, but when Allie Rice, a student at this school was murdered, meh, no social points to be scored. No colors for you, same for Madison Brooks.

I had hoped for a long time my kids would go to LSU, I would see them more often even if they lived on or around campus.

LSU really needs to sell how big of an engineering school it really is more. Top of the SEC in that regard. Our business school could be better at placing jobs, but they all have to leave to Texas for a legitimate finance career.

LSU can have all the academic success it wants but the state economy holds it back in my opinion. Young college grads don’t want to stay in BR nor do they want to move to Lafayette or Shreveport. Nola is the only true “major city” in the state, and it’s a cess pool. It’s the same for Ole miss and Miss State. Bama is starting to grow but most just go to ATL.

Uga and UF have that upper hand in the SEC with major cities to go to. This makes it easier finding jobs being close to alumni employers.

Good points.

A degree from LSU is a degree from LSU. It would be too difficult to make it “worth” more than it already is.

I think the bigger problem is LSU being in crime ridden shite hole Baton Rouge. A lot of out of staters couldn’t give a f about coming to Lsu if they aren’t involved in sports imo.

That’s a long term project, sometimes decades long to move a uni in national academic rankings.

As competitive as Tate has shown to be about athletics I’m sure he is just as competitive about academics. The question is - how much will the screwed up politics of LA interfere with Tate improving things.

CRT is the "religion" behind turning TS lights into Floyd's colors, removing Gen. Middleton's name from the library, and expunging the female tennis player.

And you are certainly downplaying the severity and proximity of crime by LSU. It wasn't always like this.

Moreover, many schools in our peer group don't have the crime rates in their towns that BR does. College Station is an eyesore of a campus compared to LSU's beauty but the town is clean and far safer.

Yes. The university could not buy for any price the positive advertising that sports success gives it.

School provides the tools and networks to succeed.. so from giving students what they need it is there.. to be rated higher a lot has to do with research… that will require academic staff improvement and state funding changes…
Not gonna happen ... present professors are happy to go to the office once in a while and show up to repeat the same lecture they have for 30 years…

LSU is a solid state school in line with most of its peers.. TOPs will keep the incoming quality of students at average at best.. professors will be on autopilot..

Recall about ten years ago LSU made it more difficult to get admitted by raising core classes required… that experiment failed ..

Close up a few of these other universities and fold the assets into lsu. I know it isn't that easy but we are spreading ourselves thin. A trade division at LSU would pay in dividends over the next couple decades as that is where the demand will be
