LSU has a negative educational image with graduating HS Seniors. The schools image needs to be fixed.

Not with the political element in Louisiana that hinders LSU.
They would also need to significantly increase the endowment to even be on par with other universities they are in competition with which will likely never happen.

Louisiana has way too many universities to begin with, there is no reason you need McNeese, ULL, ULM, Southeastern, NW State, etc. Jindal tried the consolidation method and had no chance of getting that through the Legislature.

has begun to funnel those funds to really improve specific curriculums instead of just dispersing the money across the board
I really think this is the answer. Pick 3 or 4 specific curriculums that you want LSU to emphasize. Hire renowned professors, amp up the facilities associated with these curriculums, give out good academic scholarships for students who want to study these curriculums, partner with employers in those fields for internships, etc. Develop a long-term plan to do this and stick with it.

Try to make LSU the go-to school in the region for a few specific curriculums. Once you get some traction there, begin doing the same thing with a few curriculums associated with those main curriculums.

LSU needs to offer more scholarships to overqualified out of state kids. This is what bama (along with the rise of football) did to raise their academic pedigree

My cousin from MD (34 ACT, 4.0+ GPA) will be going to LSU on a full ride scholarship, in large part because UofMD or NCSU did not offer as much. She's been heavily involved in youth Ag leadership programs and plans to study Plant and Soil Systems. My uncle came away more impressed with LSU than these other schools based on the campus visits. He mentioned the level of student support and career services in particular seemed better than them. She was also looking at Auburn and Miss St.

There are tons of highly talented kids from other states who would qualify for bigger scholarships at LSU than their nearest state schools.

The biggest thing holding back LSU is the lack of high level post-grad opportunities in LA. Our best grads go to Houston, and the kids they raise are less likely to go back to LSU than stay in TX.

You think UGA was always a highly selective school? Or did the explosive growth of ATL have more to do with it? When your school is near a center of wealth and opportunity, you not only have better nearby postgrad jobs, but you also have students applying from more affluent and well-educated families which increases selectivity and perceived reputation. It's a circular and compounding relationship.

What can LSU do to make it a preferable option for Houston kids over TAMU or UT?

Just like life, academics is what you make of it.

You can get a great education at LSU, you can also party your arse off and flunk out.

Nix/Cuz: I wasn't trying to take the political angle on it. Scouts honor. Just pointing that the knowledge of the topic is skewed. It isn't some new and shiny buzz word. It has been around in academia and the work place. Alot of us have to take bias training at work...at it's core, this is what the theory is trying to do in academia. Because, well, they actually do exist.

Again, regarding the acts of solidarity (colors, protests, etc.) of what was going on, and has been going on regarding race relations...isn't bowing out to CRT. A bit off topic of what the OP was going after, so I'll digress on the topic.

Crime hasn't gotten worst around campus. Communication about the crime has gotten better. Drinking and drug use haven't gotten worse by the students on campus; the communication about the unfortunate consequences of said actions have gotten better.

So again, driving home the point of my original comments, while crime can be of concern, and the social climate of attending a school in the deep south in the 2nd blackest state of the union can be of concern, we have done a great job with admissions policies that have proven positive with the consistent year over year growth that we're seeing on campus.

I'll assume that the comment someone made about the economic impact LSU has on BR came from someone who hasn't seen the economic impact North and South of campus in the past 10 years.

Nothing wrong with LSU academics! I have a technical degree from LSU and have had an excellent career due to my hard work and program at LSU. I would ask about our youth and parenting more than our school systems! Just my experience and 2 cents!

So long as Louisiana politicians run the state, no.

Depends on the field because thats definitely not the case for many in medicine / healthcare delivery or administration.

Idk if that translates. The top 3 academic SEC schools are Vandy, UF and TAMU. None of those are athletic powerhouses. UF is the only one that has an argument.

Has this been true historically? I know Stanford fits the mold but I always assumed their NC total was based on playing every sport imaginable.

Around 2015, I researched the costs for my kids to go to out of state schools as I live in Georgia. At the time, Alabama gave better scholarships for similar ACT/SAT scores compared to LSU. I would start by increasing LSUs awards. It will attract more of the out of state kids.

They removed the alumni scholarship..
If you had a kid with a decent gpa as a child of an alumni they would reduce out of state tuition by half …. Still had to pay the full instate tuition and half of the out of state (which use to be reasonable but they increased that a LOT also)…
I paid full tuition and half out of state fee for two of my kids to go to lsu from out of state.. it was before the upped the out of state fees a lot …

Now you can send your kid to much better out of state or private school than LSU for similar or less cost as an alumni living out of Louisiana…

LSU has a lower acceptance rate (71% vs 79%) and tighter ACT/SAT variance than Alabama. A quarter of accepted students at Alabama have an ACT below 21 vs a quarter being below 23 at LSU.

LSU Academics has a marketing problem more than anything else.

LSU also can't offer the money that other flagship schools do. Louisiana is funding TOPS for everyone, plus has 4 year college in every town.

Alabama also benefits from UGA and UF being extremely difficult to get into and being close.

Not TAF (nor LSU Athletics) issue.

They are doing their part.
