As I see it, the only way to improve the academic stature of a university is to become more selective over whom they let in to that university. I haven’t thought through all of the implications of tightening admissions, but it would certainly lead to reduced enrollment.

They tried this….. enrollment went down…
I actually thought our standings went up…
Enrollment down was not really bad because I hear profs complain it is hard to set a schedule because they have to have so much focus on freshmen and sophomore classes because of tops ( I think TAs take the slack ?) … but there is a high drop out after that and reduced upperclassman focus ( quality)…less money coming in for bettering the upper class experience…

I believe we had a new president come in also with a different focus… reduced qualifications again… this was pre Tate… I am a fan of Tate and do believe he will correct this if possible ( politics willing)

LSU already did this.

They rolled back standards a few years back to give admissions more latitude on why they let in.

Bama gives a full ride to National Merit Finalists and kids with a 36 on ACT.

LSU will be free for these kids if they live at home. If they want to live on Campus, it costs about 5k per year. These students usually get the same deal from Tulane.

Problem is that LSU expects a home town discount on scholarships for South Louisiana kids.

Well, when Alabama, Ole Miss, Miss St, Texas, etc offer the smartest and brightest Louisiana kids better academic scholarships than LSU, guess what you are left with?!?!

It is a cultural matter in Louisiana. Win football games and everyone is fine with crumbling asbestos academic buildings.

Pair that with the crime around to e campus and it is amazing that lsu does as well as it does.

And tops needs to be blown up and started from scratch.

Bama, Ole Miss , Ark and State have to offer big packages because they can't fill their classes with qualified students from pathetic public school systems.

Remove UTx from the list. They turn away 10s of thousands of quality Texas HS students every year.
They do not pursue any students from the deep south with scholarships and deals.

Legitimate question.

Family members of mine went elsewhere as there seemed to be a lack of investments towards academics.

Updating facilities without indoctrination of communism is warranted.

No offense, but kids with a perfect score and/or NMSF status can and will get great offers from a variety of schools. They can easily get a merit scholarship at a top 50 school. LSU/Bama/UGA are safeties for them.

LSU should target students with 28+ ACT in-state and 30+ out-of-state. Give them a defined scholarship that increases with their scores. Get Livvy Dunne to host official YouTube recruiting videos and promote them. Show Saturday night in Death Valley. Use the attractions that are there to get stronger students.

Bingo.
I know lots is the private school kids from the Nola tea who have ended up at Ole Miss and Bama for this reason.

And Texas and Texas A&M barely offer anything because they are getting thousands more outstanding applications than they can even think about accepting

Worked for Bama. They're a national brand academically now.

Not true anymore. There are very few schools, and BAMA is one, which have large automatic scholarships based on a certain SAT or ACT score, GPA or National Merit Finalist status. There are lots of schools using merit scholarships as bait to apply, but then awarding those scholarships as a way to diversify their class. For those who have high stats but do not qualify for financial aid, add diversity to the class, or have the means to pay full freight; schools like BAMA a great, but dwindling, option.

Alabama became a better academic institution due to Saban. THat's a fact. The university brand became much stronger and the applicant pool blew up. Additionally, more alums donated to not just sports, but both sides as alum pride soared.

The ROI of a strong brand and athletic success on the academic side is there. Just have to push for it.
