Blake Baker’s progression in 2 seasons is exactly what you want in a DC

Taken from Jacques Doucet fb
“. @LSUfootball intercepted just 6 passes in 2024, they have 14 this year. #LSU made just 15 QB sacks in 2024, they have 25 this year. Opposing 3rd down conversions are down from 41% to 34%.”

He took over the worst defense in the history of LSU football and in just 2 seasons brought us back to relevance. A lot of you demand over-night perfection and do not realize that it takes actual coaching to show improvement like that.

Did we give yards to opposing teams QBs, yes. Did we have times where we gave up Touchdowns, yes. It is still a work in progress, but not many people can have such a drastic turnaround like that. With a competent offense, we had a championship caliber defense. It’s unfair to hate on the defense when it’s literally the only reason we were ever in ANY game this season.
Whomever our next head coach is, I hope they keep the defensive staff, especially Coach BB.

Several wanted him gone last night after he gave up an opening drive field goal

The defense has played much, much better recently

Baked should be commended for the job he’s done keeping that unit together in the face of BK’s firing and the inept offense.

Would have been easy for the defense to just phone it in.

Completely agree. Even with the injuries we faced, the defense played hard every game. You can clearly see the love that the players have for Blake

With LSU fans it’s all or nothing. He is either elite and needs to be our next head coach or he’s trash and needs to be run out of town. The truth is somewhere in the middle. He’s a good coach and shouldn’t be our next head coach. He has to make some improvements with defending against running QBs. If he stays here next year that’s fine. That will mean Lane is likely the coach.

There will be so many head coaches moving this off-season there is a good chance BB get his opportunity to head coach.

I’m going to let lane pick whomever he wants as DC, it doesn’t work well when the AD insists on any staff hires

BB might be in line for the Tulane job, which has suddenly become a solid stepping stone gig, and I don’t mean that in an insulting way

He made good adjustments after the first quarter for sure but until he can game plan for running QBs I have no issue with him being replaced with the new regime.

Let's revisit this thread next week after we play a team with good talent.

Yep. He’s a good DC that can win you a National Championship if you pair him with any bit of offensive success.

Blake’s Achilles heel is mobile quarterbacks, it’s been two consecutive seasons where he has absolutely no answer for a quarterback who can run

Why? We know what we have at this point. Were the 11 previous games not enough to support my opinion?

Yup. People forget it took Saban until 2003 to really get his defense in place. 2002 saw holes in the defense and thin at the line. Hurt when Damien James was suspended mid season.

However, we have seen the difference in defense since Baker was hired. It has improved over the year before each year. The defense is a couple of top players from being elite but it is getting there.

Overall, the defense played a good game... but let's not act like that opening drive was an impressive showing by the defense. Anybody with some common sense would acknowledge that was unimpressive even with holding them to a FG. The defense cant do that in Norman next Saturday.

Prime example of Saban's "Process vs Outcome" theory.

This is exactly my point. You’re taking the opening drive and using that to justify the entire performance. Not only did we hold them to a FG when they were moving that ball at will, we held them scoreless the entire rest of the game. Including a goal line stand

I would take that performance last night for any game they played this year. They only gave up 3 points on the night.

Without Baker's defense last night.......LSU suffers an embarrassing loss at home to Western Kentucky on senior night.

WKU dropped two walk in TD passes. Both guys were wide open. Game was ugly on all accounts
