Excuse me, what are 2, 3, 4, 5 techniques?

Thanks. I’ll hang up and listen.

2 head up guard. 2i inside shoulder guard. 3 outside shoulder guard. Etc. 5 outside shoulder tackle. 1 is shoulder of center.

Alignment of a defensive front. Generally, a 3 technique lines up outside the guard, and a 5 lines up outside the tackle. (Even numbers generally indicate "head up". E.g., a DT who's head up on the guard is a 2.)

I think what this is about is getting Jordan Jefferson on the field more, which I think is a good idea. But the defensive staff seems to have issues figuring out personnel, and the best positions and rotation for personnel.

3-4 actually the more versatile defense considering it’s way easier to disguise your blitzes and your coverages, but you have to be flexible in today’s game.

If you got the right linemen, the 3-4 is dominating as frick. It’s just hard to always have 3 proper defensive linemen for it.

Nah, he’s in shape. He’s been full bore for at least four weeks. It doesn’t take that long, not at his age.

Nobody schemes LSU’s best players out of the game better than LSU coaches

I believe this is true

Not coddling because he's been a major disappointment so far, but IDK about this, though. I think he might have just run out of gas. Early in the game he was very active, albeit mostly ineffective, in pursuit. I noticed him on several plays hustling to the sidelines or chasing a runner down field.

Oh sweet. He’s been given the green light to push through a block and try to make tackles - Sweet

We’ll see how that pans out, but who do you out inside? I don’t think Wingo has the size for it. Are they going to bring in Jefferson and play a more traditional 4 man front?

It happens. It’s only House’s second season. Not a ton of time to get it together. He lost so much of his DBs from last year, and know one really knew what Maason Smith would look like since he missed the whole season.

All of the switching from 3-4 to 4-3 to 3-4 over the last 4 years has really fricked up our front seven. Our guys have been switched back and forth so much they aren’t good at either technique. It’s also fricked up how we recruit the front seven, so we have a weird mix of personnel for both systems. For example Savion Jones is a 4-3 DE that they tried to bulk up to a 3-4 DE. It hasn’t worked unfortunately.

What they were doing before clearly wasn’t working. They had to make some kind of change. I’m sure they don’t want to see Smith continue to get blasted 5 yards off the ball every play. He’s just not a nose guard. His inability to play the double team is eating him up. If you can’t at least hold a double team at the LOS, then you’ve failed the basic requirement. A good nose guard would split the double team and get back in his gap. At this point, no one runs a true 3-4 or a true 4-3. Everyone kind of runs a bit of a blended defense. Offenses are just too dynamic to be rigid with your approach.

Right. It would be more accurate to say LSU is an odd front team but every team runs odd and even fronts. The execution of the finer points of the defense is much more important. A 3-3-5 and a 4-2-5 are basically the same thing but you'll have people argue for days which one is better.

99% of our guys weren’t on the team prior to 2022. This gripe affects like only Smith and Greg Penn.

Also no matter what defense you play in you are playing similar techniques. In an odd front a DL will play a 4i more than the 3tech you'd play in an even front but those techniques are played almost identical.

He had 3 snaps as a freshman... Can hardly say that's a sufficient data set to suggest we'll see much different.

Mason is presently all hype and no production. Jefferson got none of the hype and is balling out.

I'll give a pass with his injury as they're hard to come back from for big guys, especially when it comes to conditioning, but it's time for Mason to shite or get off the pot. It's time for him to eat like a big fricking dog. Get your mind right kid and know that there's not a single OL that can handle you at your best.
