I just reposted the comment that disproves your lie like the one in this thread you previously mentioned. If your sole purpose in life wasn’t obsessing over me you might actually read the comments properly and in context instead of blowing a wad every time you see my name like some pathetic simp.

you also said

"We have the pieces Wade needs to play the way he wants to and he’s not going to play some multiple post offense."

LINK

but I guess I convinced you its possible, because now you said

"Yea it would depend on matchup and style I would guess"

its fine you changed your mind and realized I was right, and its possible and kinda intriguing

Big difference between practice and games. But to go on the road and compete with a good team in your 3rd game bodes well for the season. Guys still learning how to play with eachother in tight game situations. And Ponder for FSU is a future NBA big si great experience for ours. Dessert and Niang still adjusting to college game. Will take a little time but they will get better.

I watched the extended highlights.

Dent looks like your Tremont Waters type player. I'd be surprised if he didnt lead the team in scoring.

Clark looks like a viable 2nd option. Was surprised how chubby Clark is but he moves well.

Bashir can really shoot.

Ruzic looks to be the 4th guy. Really impressed with his movement and skill.

Diobate and Niang were not impressive at all in this game.

I am very optimistic about the team after watching FL St exhibition. That was a pretty well-played, intense game by both teams.

Ruzic looks like a really skilled, smart, and active 7 footer. Dessert did not show much but he showed, on isolated occasions, some nice low post moves and decent defense. I don't see why both of those guys could not be on the floor at the same time. Probably not best in a starting lineup, though.

The guard play looks really solid. Dent is a great PG and Clark and Bashir are going to be reliable shooters.

They need to get better at the line. They probably would have beaten FL St if they shot in the high 70%s at the line (I did not confirm what it actually was - it just seemed like they missed way too many).

Niang was definitely most disappointing to me in the debut, he's supposed to be the top international player potentially coming into college basketball. He's gotta be better. It's a exhibition game 1, so not worried at all yet.

Dessert also to needs to be better

FT shooting absolutely needs to get better. Especially from Dent who will have the ball in his hands in tight games.

Seems like Dent and Ruzic are easy fixes on the FTs and we’ve see Wade have success with players in that area (Watford, Gaines) being the main examples. It really needs to be fixed ASAP.

IMO, you saw what kind of individual pieces this team has. But there were some characteristic and uncharacteristic issues that led to the loss.

The FT shooting is a concern. Wade's teams have always been good at the line...which is very important since getting to the FT is a key part of the offense. Wade gets the benefit of the doubt on this one that the FT shooting will improve but 58% (what LSU has averaged in the three exhibition games) isn't going to cut it, at all.

The 11 TOs were a bit higher than Wade's teams generally commit. Dessert had 3 of those, so he probably gets a bit of a pass being it was his first action.

I'm worried the defensive rebounding will be this team's Achilles heel. LSU shot 50% from the field. 43% from 3. Those are both winning numbers. Especially compared to FSU who shot 43% overall; 39% from 3. LSU also made 15 three's to FSU's 11. So why did LSU lose? FSU had 10 more FG attempts and was +8 on second chance points. Some of the reason FSU had more FGA was LSU's turnovers. But the bigger reason was 13 offensive rebounds.

That wasn't just a one game anomaly either. LSU shot 49% overall, 39% from 3 vs. UCF while holding UCF to 42% overall and 34%. With that kind of FG% discrepancy LSU should be winning relatively comfortably. Now, LSU's poor FT shooting vs. UCF played a role there too. But UCF had 15 more FGA than LSU...largely because of 17 offensive rebounds. UCF was +9 in second chance points.

Wade's teams have habitually been poor defensive rebounding teams. The size and athleticism of this team seems to be there to be a good rebounding team. So the only conclusion for the struggles is Wade's approach to the defensive glass. I don't know if it is just not sending enough guys to the glass or if it is some fallout from some lazy defensive effort. That stat MUST improve, or there are going to be frustrating nights where LSU outshoots their opponent (in terms of FG%) but still loses because they are giving their opponent so many more FG attempts.

They were up and down in defensive rebounding under Wade the first time around. Top 5 in three of his 5 years, #1 in the SEC 2020. Their two bad seasons they were 10th his final year and 11th his first year at LSU. It def needs to improve with this group, Ruzic and Dessert will be fine, Dioubate is capable but we’re scrambling on too many defensive possessions leaving us outnumbered on the backside way too often.

Niang and Dessert just couldn’t get into the flow of the game. Dessert had a couple of good moves inside and Niang didn’t make huge mistakes but both were passive and kind of spectators on the court. Niang passed up 2 easy opportunities he normally would attack on. Both were just not playing at the same speed everyone else was.

Agreed that both looked a little rusty watching live. After watching the game a second time (while not watching it on split screen with the football game), Niang did a lot of things away from the ball. He had the highest +/- at 12, next closest were Ruzic and Ugo, both at 4, everybody else was in the negative. Seems to have a high basketball IQ. Think he will be fine.

Dessert did some good things and think he will be fine. That being said, Ruzic seems a lot closer to being ready for SEC play at this point. I'm sure with a few games under his belt, Dessert will look completely different.

Niang is one of the best off ball players I’ve seen in awhile. He was just tentative, had a couple of times in transition where he’d normally take it to the hole but passed it off instead. The guards will have to learn to look for him, he’s a great finisher and he’ll lose his man in the half court a lot but that’s a reps and cohesion thing. Dessert is def a physical presence with nice touch inside 8 feet but I’m not sure that Ruzic doesn’t fit with the other starting pieces a little better. There’s some rotation stuff that probably needs to be tweaked as well.

Lester did you not watch the game? Dent can get his shot off from wherever he wants. He was taking it to the hoop against their big men and scoring with contact from the much bigger defender. Clark seems like a hell of a shooter as well.

I assume you are looking at gross defensive rebounding numbers. That number can be skewed by high tempo, high possession, high FG attempts. Meaning, the more shots taken the higher number of rebounds to be had.

Defensive rebounding % is the better stat because it measures the % of defensive rebounds a team gets relative to the opportunities to get a defensive rebound. For example, if, because of a high volume of FG attempts, there are 50 defensive rebounding opportunities and a team is getting only 68% of them, the gross defensive number is 34 defense rebounds. But that still means you're allowing 16 second chance possessions. Compare that to a game with less FG attempts which may produce only 40 defensive rebounding opportunities. If a team gets 75% of those defensive rebounds, the gross number is 30 defensive rebounds. But they are only allowing 10 second chance possessions...that's the ultimate goal. Limit your opponent to less second chance opportunities.

In that respect, Wade's LSU teams were never good on the defensive glass. Below are the yearly national ranks in that category:

2018 - 301st
2019 - 254th
2020 - 192nd
2021 - 326th
2022 - 291st

Conversely, they were often very good on the offensive glass. There is always going to be some trade off...which is fine. But you don't want the numbers to be skewed too drastically. Struggling on the defensive glass means you often waste good defensive work by getting a first shot miss. For a group like Wade's LSU teams who often shot a high FG% and scored a lot, you don't want to give your opponent the opportunity to shoot a lower % but still beat you simply because you allowed them the opportunity to take so many more shots.

That was one of the main frustrations with Wade's LSU teams. The first shot defense was decent. If was the second chances they allowed because of poor defensive rebounding that hurt

Defensive rebound% in college basketball has a lot of variation depending on which site you’re looking at. If you google the statistic you’ll get 5 prominent sites who all have different numbers for rebound %. The official NCAA site doesn’t track it at all and sports reference only tracks it individually. My guess is some sites are more detailed and go into live missed FTs whe others only count live ball rebounds. Thats the only possible way it could vary like it does.

The great thing about pre season game is as a coach you get to experiment with players to see how they react in different situations.WW will get his best players on the court and use what he saw in these games to his advantage. This team just like the FB team will improve game to game, but there will be some bumps in the road.New coaches ,schemes ,players = inconsistency at times but the talent is there to compete with the best.
