It will be an interesting battle for 1B next year with Larson, Costello, and Yamin. Plus 2025 recruiting class and whatever Jay cooks up in the portal.

People saying Jake Brown can play All-SEC defense are forgetting what eliminated us last year.
I think it prudent not to judge a player based on a single play. Example: Bregman made a bad error in Omaha in '13 that costed us big time vs UCLA. IMO, he was the best glove we ever had at SS.

Curiel is not one of them, top OF in the country is still top OF in the country.
Is Curiel better than Dylan Crews was at this point? DC didnt play CF until his sophomore year.

DC was a generational talent. It wouldn’t be fair to compare anyone to him. It ruined Paxton Kling.

I agree. Simply providing a counter argument against Curiel in CF. If DC didn't play there as a freshman over Digiacomo, then Curiel probably shouldn't over Stanfield.

He's a ball player who produces on a consistent basis.
Seems like your misremembering a bit. Larson has actually been pretty streaky. He hit a pretty long slump last season and then apparently heated up in the Cape. Now it sounds like his bat has gone cold again. He may just be a streaky guy at this point in his career.
Also the guy had a very weak arm for RF and he also misplayed a couple balls out there. I like Larson a lot but hes a pretty significant drop off defensively from Curiel, Brown, and Stanfield.

I don’t think it’s a like for like comparison

Crews was being asked to carry the load offensively from day 1. Putting him in a less demanding defensive position allowed for the brain space needed to make the offensive jump more quickly.
Curiel won't be asked to carry the offensive load this year. We don't necessarily need him to be the full time CF either. But letting him ease into defense could allow his offense to reach its potential sooner.

He's a completely different type player so there's no use in trying to compare the two

At this point? As in before the first pitch of the first game of his career? He is the exact same story as Dylan Crews was at this point.
Both are/were highly touted freshman with nothing but limitless potential and prior accolades.
We all know 3 was special. Time will tell what Curiel can be.

One sentence is all that Frey is given. This guy generates no conversation. He is spoken about like he’s behind John Pearson. He’s hanging around this program when the opportunity to be a starter elsewhere must have presented itself.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but i do think Frey may have been better served going to juco or somewhere lower last year so that he could get reps and then transfered here later. I know he was fighting off injury and i don't recall even specifically when that ocurred, but still. It's entirely possible that he's going to struggle getting reps again this year. I think Jay sees potential in him, and will give him at least sporadic opportunities, but Frey is gonna have to seize it if he really wants it. I think had he been healthy all last year he would have had a chance to become a core part of the team. This year there looks to be a lot more hungry mouths to feed.

It seems like Curiel gets a great jump and takes the correct angle every time. I'm actually going to be surprised when he messes one up. He is already an elite defender. His defense is ahead of his offense in my opinion. You guys that haven't seen him in action yet will be able to see him in action soon enough.

Wow, I think it’s a little early to write him off before anyone has had a regular season at-bat.

Just found this on a Jay interview on Dandydon.
when Jay was asked which returning player will improve the most with the bat.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Josh Pearson has his best year yet. Ethan Frey is somebody that I always feel is right there on the cusp of really turning the corner, and he’ll have a lot of opportunities this year as well.

Not sure it was a clear indicator, as Milam was with the 2nd team today, but Josh batted 4th with the starters and swung it well. I always kind of felt like Jay would start him opening day. I guess we'll see. I believe it will be between Reaves and Josh for DH on opening day.
Stanfield
Milam
Jones
Brown/Pearson
Dickinson
Pearson/Brown
Hernandez
Curiel
Braswell
Just a guess.
