Baseball players providing the best surprises and biggest disappointments after 3 games

I know it's an extremely small sample so don't waste anyone's time pointing out the obvious.
Best Surprises
1. Zack Mathis
He batted .333 with an OPS of .891. In addition, he made several nice fielding plays at third base. He did make one error in 13 chances but he proved himself to be more than adequate defensively. It wouldn't shock me if Mathis moves over to shortstop at some point if Hughes continues to be a little shaky defensively there. (Hughes made 2 errors in 9 chances.)
2. Alex Milazzo
Milazzo also batted .333 and had an OPS of .833. He played error free in the one game he caught and he threw out the only runner who attempted to steal against him. Milazzo stole a base himself on a straight steal. When was the last time LSU had a catcher steal a base on a straight steal attempt?
Biggest Disappointments
1. Giovanni DiGiacomo
Gio went hitless for the weekend and struck out in half of his at-bats. His only time to get on base was via a walk. So he finished the weekend with a batting average of .000 and an OPS of .200. Even more concerning was he looked really uncomfortable on several fly balls to centerfield. He completely misjudged a fly ball in Saturday's second game which went over his head and allowed the hitter to turn it into a triple. He turned a couple of routine fly balls into spectacular outs. On the plus side defensively he turned on the afterburners and made a really nice catch against the fence in deep center in Saturday's second game.
2. Gavin Dugas
Part of my disappointment for Gavin was I have such high hopes for him. He only had one base hit in 8 at-bats for a BA of .125 and an OPS of .250. He struck out more times this weekend (4) than any other batter which means he struck out in half of his at-bats. He had zero walks.
I hope later in the season I can look back at this thread and laugh at it for how Gio and Gavin turned things around after a rough first weekend.

I was shocked that Dugas struggled as much as he did

Watching Cade Beloso go opposite field was nice.

You put in a lot of time creating this thread.

I did like Mathis's arm throwing across the diamond. Only one of his throws was off but Beloso made a good sweeping tag for the out. It was good not watching short throws in the dirt to first.
Bianco's fly out Friday night would have been a homer Saturday. Sitting in left it looked like the wind just killed it. I really am pulling for him to do well.

Dugas looked so uncomfortable at the plate, agreed. I hope milazzo can keep it up at the plate but i expect he will probably regress in sec play

My biggest takeaway was Jaden Hill back throwing.

Can’t wait to see your surprises and disappointments after next weekend. Can we count on this throughout the season?

It's always smart to use a small sample size to draw conclusions (especially in baseball)

I agree.
Gio and Gavin is a little bit concerning since we already have 1 black hole on offense.
Three black holes in the same line up is a recipe for disaster.

You can say that again

Not worth fretting about. If it persists, some of them will be removed from the lineup. PM is always good for that

Watching Cade Beloso go opposite field was nice.
He ended up batting .500 for the weekend with an OPS of 1.167. The only reason he's not on the "Best Surprises" list is, well, I'm really not surprised with his hitting.
He also made two really nice tags at first base when the throw to first pulled him off the bag towards homeplate. The one tag where the first base ump missed the call and it was reversed by the replay Beloso damn near dislocated the runner's hip with the tag.
I was sitting in the purple seats closest to first base and you could hear the tag...WHAP!... as the runner went by. I have no idea how that ump missed that call.

Good OP.
I would only add I was mildly disappointed in Marceaux/Fontenot. Not freaking out in the least. The season is long. I just know they can pitch better. Fontenot was amazing vs FSU in the super regional.

Zack Mathis was not a surprise to most of us. He has been absolutely killing the ball and lived up to expectations.
Giovanni and Dugas were both disappointing last year. More of the same this year.
Milazzo was a pleasant surprise in the batters box. Expectations of him are very high behind the plate.
My biggest surprises...
1. Garza, he looks like a different catcher behind the plate. His defense has improved tremendously.
2. The bunting. Last year we could not advance a runner to save our lives. Bianco among others laid down tremendous bunts.
Edit:
Fixed to Dugas
