Are we definitely switching back to the 3-4 on defense?

If so, who do you see making the 2-deep rotation in the defensive line? Definitely Jaquelin Roy, Maason Smith, and Mekhi Wingo, but who else?

It’s going to be a multiple defense. Likely ran by formations like 3-4, 3-3-5, and a 4-2-5. Expect us to run a lot of nickel. Especially with a really good one in Greg Brooks to get him on the field.

Exactly. Likely some derivatives of three lineman, an edge, a couple backers, and five backs

I thought the defense was better with Smith on the end when Gaye was out. Smith seems to better lock down the end. Gaye would get caught to far up the field or to inside with no OLB support on plays and the RB's would get outside and nobody was home.

I think we are switching to a defense that does not announce its formation in advance. (At least I hope this is the case.)

Attacking 3-4

It’s a defense Ed O didn’t even know existed.

Don’t forget BJ Ojulari

Depends what kind of 3 man front they run.

They might run a de, nt, and dt.

Remember he’s talking about a 3 man front. So the ends won’t have contain responsibilities as often, unless we stay in 3-3-5 a ton.

Probably more of a 3-3-5 than a true 3-4/4-3. Ojulari will be the next Josh Allen under House. He's tailor made for that DE/OLB role. Roy at a 5-tech DE/ 3-tech DT along with Wingo. There is some versatility with the DL group either way.

House uses multiple defensive fronts between the 4-3 and 3-4 scheme. He likes his defensive line to get in the backfield and create negative plays. Having coached linebackers, House believes in strong linebacker play. He wants to mix things up between zone and man in the secondary.

He’d probably still be here if he did.

I have no doubt that a coach of Brian Kelly's caliber has come in and immediately started researching the great college football defenses of the late 80's, 90's, and 2000's and is implementing a plan to replicate those as we speak. Since Ed is out of the coaching game he was nice enough to donate his vast library of coaching books to the new staff:
